All our MSc courses are career-oriented and cover both theoretical background and practical design considerations. Lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists. Many of our students continue their studies to undertake research towards a PhD. All MSc courses are of one calendar year´s duration, comprising two terms of taught examinable material followed by a research dissertation.
These courses comprise two terms of taught material, assessed by examination and coursework, followed by a five month period involving one or more design projects and/or a research dissertation.
All students undertake 12 modules, six in the autumn term, examined in January, and six in the spring term, examined after Easter. These modules include both core and elective material, enabling students to develop primary study themes.
All of our MSc courses are also offered on a part-time basis. Methods of study may include:
* One day per week over three years
* One and a half days per week over two years
* Term release
The term release option normally involves attendance in the autumn term of one year and the spring term of a second year, but this may vary from one course to another, depending on your personal circumstances. The dissertation is undertaken with regular guidance from a College supervisor, by private study or by arrangement at your place of employment.

The Concrete Structures courses provide training in the design, analysis and assessment of concrete structures including bridges and buildings. Modules include:

* Reinforced concrete I
* Reinforced concrete II
* Seismic design of concrete structures
* Structural analysis
* Structural assessment and loading
* Structural dynamics
* Time and temperature-dependent behaviour of concrete structures
* Option 1: Business management
* Option 2: Sustainable development
MSc course add-on modules
This MSc course offers the add-on modules of business management and sustainable development. Each of these options comprise 120 hours of study and are taken as an alternative to a corresponding amount of engineering study.
Business management
This module equips you with the skills needed to work in competitive business environments in the civil engineering industry. It is suitable for those who wish to combine a technical competence in their chosen field with a grasp of the principles of business management. The module is designed to complement core material in the MSc courses. The course is divided into four units. Further details are available from the Department (email cvenquiries@imperial.ac.uk).
Sustainable development
This module provides you with the skills to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development into all the stages of an engineering project’s development. It is suitable for those who wish to direct their career towards issues of development and redevelopment, especially in the provision of infrastructure, and its renovation and renewal. You will gain the practical tools necessary to apply the principles of engineering for sustainable development in real world contexts. The course comprises three units. Requirements
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
To obtain maximum benefit from studies at Imperial College all students must have a good command of the English Language. College therefore requires applicants to have taken an English Language test and achieved an acceptable grade or score before admission can be confirmed. The College Senate has approved the tests set out below. Please note that the scores or grades indicated are the minimum levels generally acceptable to the College. Departments have the discretion to prescribe higher requirements either for specific courses of study or in specific cases where there are serious doubts as to the abilities of individual students to undertake proposed programmes of study.
Students must make arrangements to take the appropriate test well in advance of the start of their course. Places will not be confirmed and students will not be allowed to register until confirmation of an acceptable result has been received as set out below.
* A first degree taught in English within the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, Guyana, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, West Indies.
* Candidates whose first degree was not taught in English but who have then successfully completed a one-year MSc (or equivalent) course at a UK university.
* A grade of not less than C in English Language in GCSE, IGCSE, GCE `O´ Level or equivalent.
* A grade of not less than C in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
* A pass in the University Test of English for Speakers of Other Languages (UETESOL).
* British Council IELTS Test
A score of not less than 6.5 including a score of 5.0 or better in the written and spoken English elements of the academic test.
* TOEFL
A score of not less than 90 overall in the internet-based test (iBT), to include 24 in Writing and 20 in Speaking; or 600 in the paper-based test (PBT), or 250 in the computer-based test (CBT), both to include a minimum score of 4.5 in the written English.
