The International Design Business Management program (IDBM) is a joint teaching and research platform of the Aalto University School of Economics, the School of Art and Design, and the Schools of Technology. The Aalto University is a major Nordic research and teaching institution, created through the merger of the Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design Helsinki, and the Helsinki University of Technology.
The purpose of the IDBM program is to develop world-class expertise in global design business management through multidisciplinary research and learning that cuts across the areas of business, design and technology. The IDBM program aims to train skilled professionals for key roles in global design business. The program emphasizes the importance of design as a competitive factor, linked with state-of-the-art technology and business models.
Arising from the needs of the industry, this program gives future marketers, engineering experts and designers an opportunity to practice important interpersonal skills through cooperative industry projects and specialized courses. The program builds on the business, design or technology skills and competence achieved at the bachelor’s level, enabling students to make full use of their own potential as members of interdisciplinary teams, often within project-based work.
Structure
The two-year 120 ECTS degree program contains four core modules, elective studies, and a master’s thesis. The program can be taken completely in English.
The core orientation module provides students with a theoretical basis for their studies, covering necessary tools such as project management and research methods, developing and sustaining creative environments, processes and organizations, and methods of administration and management. The module also comprises personal study planning.
Each one of the core compulsory modules is carried out by or at one of the Aalto University Schools:
* The Design module has a focus on strategic design and management.
* The Business module focuses on design-intensive business operations.
* The Technology module focuses on technical product design, innovation and its processes.
Elective studies are chosen from the curricula offered by the Aalto University; other alternatives include exchange programs at other partner universities of Aalto. To conclude the program students need to write a master’s thesis.
Note: Depending of the school of registration the amount of credits awarded for the courses and the thesis will vary. For more detailed information regarding the structure, courses and amount of credits given by each school go to the Master Program, Courses section of the website.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
