Biostatistics is the joint term for a number of statistical methods and models that have proven particularly useful within certain biological and medical applications. Examples include clinical trials, which is important in testing new pharmaceutical substances, survival analysis, where life lengths of different groups are compared, and epidemiology, where risk factors behind illnesses are studied. Biostatisticians can work in sectors like pharmaceutical companies, consultancy firms, public authorities and institutes and medical research. The Master’s programme in Biostatistics is a two-year programme that turns towards those that have a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics and want to specialize in Biostatistics. The programme is also an excellent preparation for graduate studies in Mathematical Statistics. One course in mathematical statistics of 7.5 credits is mandatory while the other courses are elective in mathematical statistics, including biostatistics, of at least 45 credits, in computer science of at least 7.5 credits and in biology or medicine of at least 15 credits. The programme ends with a diploma work of 30 credits which leads to a Master’s Degree. The programme will be given in English. More information can be obtained from the Student’s Counsellor in Mathematical Statistics.

The educations fields are mathematical statistics, scientific computing, biology and medicine. The programme is a two year full-time study programme
that is composed of courses in mathematical statistics on the second level. The education covers 120 credits. One course in mathematical statistics is a compulsory course. Other courses are elective within mathematical statistics, of which at least three courses in biostatistics (45 credits) one course in scientific computing (7.5
credits) and courses in bilogy or medicine (15 hp). The education ends with a degree project in biostatistics for 30 credits. Prerequisites are a knowledge equivalent to courses Probability Theory II, FC, 7.5 hp, Theory of Statistical Inference, FC, 7.5 hp and Linear Statistical Models, FC, 7.5 hp. A student who does not have these prerequisites is recommended to study them within facultative block.
