The Master’s Programme in Language Sciences with a specialization in English (English Linguistics) provides an in-depth two-year course of study of the core areas of English linguistics: phonology, syntax, semantics, and Old and Middle English, as well as academic English, with optional courses in, for example, sociolinguistics. You will be trained in independent and critical work on linguistic issues, and you will improve your competence in the analysis of language data. The programme aims to extend and develop students’ knowledge in their chosen field of study, as well as to strengthen their inter-disciplinary knowledge of scientific theory, ethics and research methodology. The training consists of compulsory courses that are common to the whole programme, compulsory courses in the main field of study, as well as optional courses from a pool of courses offered by departments from the Faculty of Humanities. Your work with the master’s thesis will develop your ability to conduct a linguistic investigation, analyse and discuss your observed data, and produce a scientific text in adequate English. The programme, which provides detailed knowledge and skills, may serve as preparation for Third Level studies(PhD level) in English linguistics, or for a professional career in connection with language: in schools and higher education, work in archives and museums, libraries, publishing companies, domestic and international administration (e.g. in the EU), journalism, interpretation and translation.
Contents
This programme constitutes four semesters of full-time studies and consists of both obligatory and optional courses, of which at least 60 Higher Education Credits (HECs) are in the main field of study/specialisation. The programme has ten main fields of study/specialisations: General Linguistics, Ancient Greek, English,
Philosophy, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Slavic Languages, and Bilingualism. Each semester generally comprises four course units of 7.5 HECs. The semester is divided into two equal parts so that two course units of 7.5 HECs are taken in parallel during each half of the semester. The degree project constitutes one semester's work of 30 HECs, which in practice may be spread across several semesters. The programme starts with two courses that are mandatory for every main field of study/specialisation: "Language in use" and "Scientific Methods and Research Ethics"; and finishes with a joint essay seminar during the fourth semester. Other joint courses in the programme are "English for Academic Research" and "Computational Linguistics", both given during the third semester. Additionally, each main field of study/specialisation has two obligatory courses
carrying a total of 15 HECs. Of the remaining 45 HECs, at least 15 HECs must be taken within the main field of study/specialisation and 15 HECs within another main field of study/specialisation. Courses are selected in consultation with the course coordinator from the selection of courses common to the included departments, or
from the university's other courses. These courses should mainly be at the graduate cycle (Master's). All ten main fields of study/specialisations lead to a Degree of Master's of 120 HECs.

A Degree of Bachelor of Arts, including 90 ECTS credits (major) in a discipline related to the course (English Linguistics). Applicants’ knowledge of English must be documented by an international proficiency test (TOEFL test) including TWE with a minimum of 630 (paper) 267 (computer) or 109 (Internet) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency or IELTS test with a minimum of 7.5 (and no module under 7), or the equivalent.
