Students taking this master programme will be able to deal with a wide range of problems within Caring Sciences and related knowledge areas. The knowledge acquired by the students can be applied in those sections of society where a deeper insight into caring science is of vital importance.

The students will acquire great familiarity with the methodical and ethical demands in caring sciences. After completing the programme the students are expected to demonstrate deeper knowledge in the scientific foundation of the caring sciences as well as demonstrate an ability to search for, collect, assess, critically analyze, interpret and apply methods within this scientific field. Furthermore the student will demonstrate a greater knowledge within a specific area in relation to the chosen eligible courses.

The programme contains the courses: The Swedish perspective on Welfare, Health and health care and Social work 15Credits, Scientific Theory and Method 15 Credits, Scientific Theory and Method 7, 5 Credits, Migration and Health 15 Credits, Health and Social work among elderly persons 15 Credits, Care of patients with acute cardiac problems 15 Credits, Public Health, 7.5 Credits, Advanced nurse practitioner 7.5 Credits, Degree project 30 Credits.

The society has an increasing demand for persons, with higher academic education, working with the development of health care. Due to the economic development of the societies and to the demographic changes in the populations caring and health become vital areas. To promote health and to deliver cost effective care of good quality is a main task in many societies and requires well educated staff.

The Master programme prepares students for work with questions related to caring and health. The Master's programme in Health Sciences aims to provide the students with a solid knowledge base for a career in the above mentioned fields of specialisation in both the private and public sectors.

The students will also be prepared for further studies towards a PhD.


Contents

The whole of the programme is given at Campus Växjö.

The programme comprises three compulsory courses with a total of 37.5 credits. There are also optional courses that make up the remaining 52.5 credits of the programme. The programme’s optional courses can be taken in adjacent subjects such as psychology, social work and medical science. The students can set a particular profile on their education with their choice of optional courses. The order in which the optional courses occur can vary in the programme. The final course is a degree project paper in the main field of study, Caring Science worth 30 credits.

All teaching is carried out in the English language.

Community contacts

During the student’s work with the degree project paper there are possibilities to carry out empirical studies with data collection within various health, care, social care and nursing related fields.

Studies Abroad

In order to strengthen the international/intercultural perspective in the programme the possibility is given to carry out a part of the study programme in accordance with the school’s exchange programme. The planning for this is carried out in consultation between the school’s international coordinator and the programme coordinator.

Scope of the programme

The aim of the study programme is for the student to be prepared for work in today’s and tomorrow’s health service, social care and other nursingrelated
fields in a society characterized by ecological, economic and social sustainability. Diversity is a focal point throughout the programme. The teaching is based on actively preventing discrimination and has an ethical focus. The term diversity entails gender, age, sexual preference, country of origin, and social class when encountering different types of ill health.
