Advanced Mechanical Engineering may be taken full-time over 12 months or part-time over two to three years. The part-time course may be taken two days per week over two years or one day per week over three years. Because of the relatively short time spent in College, part-time students are expected to have considerable support from their employers amounting to an average of about one month per year spent working on their projects at their workplace.

The MSc course provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the 'state of the art' in one or more of the many areas of mechanical engineering in which the Department has acknowledged expertise. This combines with the potential for students to develop their abilities in subjects such as numerical analysis and signal processing, which are useful in all areas of mechanical engineering and are associated with the application of computers in engineering practice.

The principal component of the course is the individual project, which is usually associated with current research activity or industrial consultancy, allowing you to gain substantial expertise in one particular area. Further expertise is developed by taking taught course modules. Students can study an unusually broad range of subjects in the Department as a result of our position as one of the largest university engineering departments in the UK.

The success of the course can be measured by the large proportion of graduates who go on to find appropriate and challenging posts in industry, government, and universities at home and abroad.

Contents

Requirements

Normally the requirement is an upper second class Honours degree or better in engineering or science from a UK university, or an equivalent qualification from an overseas university. Industrial experience, whilst not a requirement for entry, is a factor that would weigh in your favour.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

To obtain maximum benefit from studies at Imperial College all students must have a good command of the English Language. College therefore requires applicants to have taken an English Language test and achieved an acceptable grade or score before admission can be confirmed. The College Senate has approved the tests set out below. Please note that the scores or grades indicated are the minimum levels generally acceptable to the College. Departments have the discretion to prescribe higher requirements either for specific courses of study or in specific cases where there are serious doubts as to the abilities of individual students to undertake proposed programmes of study.

Students must make arrangements to take the appropriate test well in advance of the start of their course. Places will not be confirmed and students will not be allowed to register until confirmation of an acceptable result has been received as set out below.
