The MA in Literature and Culture caters to students whose interests and academic backgrounds are in literary studies and European culture in the broad sense.
The MA programme Literature and Culture offers students the opportunity to pursue specialised study of a major European literature (e.g. Comparative Literature, English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Slavic and Spanish literature), as well as opportunities to explore the interrelations of literature with other kinds of cultural objects, such as films, digital media, and the visual arts. Our understanding of 'European' refers to the European-influenced globe rather than just the designated continent. Thus our courses frequently engage with the cultures of regions such as the French Maghreb, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Canada and the United States. While students will follow one of the specialisations, it is possible to combine courses from two or more programmes and carry out comparative research projects.
The specialisation in Comparative Literature comprises 60 ECTS credits:
42 credits of courses
18 credits for a Master’s thesis
The subjects of the courses can be divided into three main areas:
The thesis report on research is carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s).
Degree awarded
Upon successful completion of the Comparative Literature specialisation, students receive a Master of Arts (MA) diploma in Literary Studies.
Credit transfer
Students who show exceptional promise are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research programme. Once students are admitted to the Research programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.
The Research masters in Cultural Analysis and Literary Studies are strongly linked to the specialisation Comparative Literature.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
