Location of University of Amsterdam

The academic study of Western esotericism has flourished in recent years, with a veritable cornucopia of new publications.

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the first university in the world to offer a coherent Master's programme devoted to this specialised field. The programme therefore represents a unique opportunity for students to be at the vanguard of a new and exciting development in the study of Western culture and religion. An added advantage of studying Western esotericism at the UvA is the city's Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica. This library contains the world's best collection of materials (books, manuscripts and early prints) on Hermetic philosophy and related currents, and provides excellent facilities for study. For more information, see the link below.

Contents

This programme is characterised by a special emphasis on the influence of general modernisation and secularisation processes on the development of esoteric movements, as well as on the way the careful examination of such processes leads to a new perspective on the development of Western culture and society.

Programme outline

Western Esotericism is a programme in the Master Theology and Religious Studies. The programme yields 60 ECTS credits:

  • 42 credits for courses
  • 18 credits for a Master's thesis.

The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Fulfilment of all the requirements will take at least one year.

Thesis

The Master's thesis is reports on research carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s). Researching and writing the thesis should take ten full weeks. The final text should be approximately 22,000 words.

Degree requirements

Western Esotericism is a programme in the Master Theology and Religious Studies. Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Master's degree in Theology and Religious Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).

Credit transfer

Students who show exceptional promise during a regular or professional Master's programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research Master's programme. Once students are admitted to the Research Master's programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's programme. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
