The masters programme Economics, Trade and Policy provides a deepening education in the field of international and regional economics. The programme aims to give students quantitative and theoretical competencies to work with economic analyses related to the location of production and trade at various spatial levels: international, inter-regional, and local.
The comprehensive focus on location and trade provides a deep understanding of economic interaction and dynamics in both the local and global economy. This focus is highly relevant to both developed and developing countries. The programme provides you with knowledge and skills that are attractive to both government and industry.
During the first year the programme gives a solid background in advanced microeconomic theory along with sophisticated mathematical and econometric methodologies, preparing for advanced economic analyses. The second year offers education in advanced issues of macroeconomics along with various elective courses at JIBS or at one of JIBS partner universities abroad.
All courses are taught in English. Due to the fact that Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) has an exchange programme including about 200 partner universities, and that a number of master programmes at JIBS are open to students from around the world, the courses have a diverse international participation of students. This international atmosphere contributes to a broad view of the economic and policy issues analysed and discussed in courses.
This programme is supported by faculty with strong research background in inter-regional and international trade as well as multisectoral interaction and change. JIBS has very active research in international trade and regional economics, with a substantial number of publications in internationally renowned refereed journals, and as doctoral dissertations. The Economics Department at JIBS is currently ranked in the top quarter of Swedish research institutions listed in RePEc (Research Papers in Economics), and is a strong contributor to regional science research. In 2010, JIBS hosted the 50th Anniversary European Congress of the Regional Science Association International, which included Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman among the participants.
Career prospects
This education prepares students for positions demanding analytical skills in economics, especially those related to trade and the dynamics of production and consumption in the global economy. Such positions may be found in either the governmental sector or the private sector around the world. The programme also prepares students for doctoral research education.
