The MSc offers a thorough grounding in modern epidemiological research. Students gain a unique insight into the theory and methods developed for the epidemiological study and control of both chronic and infectious disease. The course provides students with opportunities to apply research techniques to a variety of challenging epidemiological and biomedical problems.
Students taking the MSc in Modern Epidemiology will follow a common core pathway in Term 1 that covers epidemiological study design; biostatistical methods in epidemiology, genetic epidemiology and the epidemiology, evolution and control of infectious disease.
From October 2010 students may pursue the MSc with specialisation by choosing to follow one of three pathways during Term 2:
Biostatistics (led by Professor Sylvia Richardson)
• Develop expertise in regression techniques, multilevel modelling, Bayesian statistical modelling and spatial analysis. Learn about a range of biostatics topics and develop skills in analysing data using R or Winbugs; and opt for the title of MSc in Modern Epidemiology (Biostatistics).
Environmental and Chronic Disease Epidemiology (led by Professors Elio Riboli and Paul Elliott)
• Develop expertise relevant to studies that use modern, multidisciplinary approaches to measure environmental factors, diet and lifestyle; learn how novel approaches such as lifecourse, molecular and genetic epidemiology may improve our understanding of health and chronic disease, and how that relates to risk assessment and health policies globally and nationally; and opt for the title of MSc in Modern Epidemiology (Environmental and Chronic Disease).
Infectious Disease Epidemiology (led by Professor Geoff Garnett and Dr Nicholas Grassly)
• Develop expertise in infectious disease epidemiology with a particular focus on mathematical modelling and statistical analysis of data. You will also be able to choose from modules on vector-borne diseases, evolution and genetics on infections, the dynamics of childhood infections and immunisation and outbreak investigation and opt for the title of MSc in Modern Epidemiology (Infectious Disease).
Students may elect to study for the broader title of MSc in Modern Epidemiology without reference to specialisation.
Some core modules studied in the first term are shared with the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme.
In Term 2 various module options are offered. Please note; if the number of students choosing to study a given module is insufficient then the module may not run or it may be offered in a different format.
This programme aims to:
* provide graduate students from a range of backgrounds with the quantitative skills required for research in modern epidemiology;
* broaden the knowledge base of existing clinicians and scientists in related disciplines who wish to acquire and "update" their skills in the application of research methods to epidemiology and biostatistics;
* provide students with the knowledge and skills to design and conduct epidemiological studies, and to interpret, analyse and present resulting data.
* promote scientific debate and critical appraisal skills;
* promote the use of an interdisciplinary (mathematical, biological, medical and statistical) approach to the problems of communicable and non-communicable disease control;
* develop expertise in the acquisition of knowledge about biological, economic, and social factors which influence health and exposure to disease;
* offer the opportunity to develop specific interest and expertise in specialist topics such as spatial epidemiology, statistical genetics, advanced biostatistics, quantitative analysis of infectious disease dynamics, and health economics.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA UK upper second class Honours degree or overseas equivalent will be the normal entrance requirement. Suitable candidates are likely to be those with a background in mathematics or statistics, medicine (human and veterinary) or biological sciences.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
To obtain maximum benefit from studies at Imperial College all students must have a good command of the English Language. College therefore requires applicants to have taken an English Language test and achieved an acceptable grade or score before admission can be confirmed. The College Senate has approved the tests set out below. Please note that the scores or grades indicated are the minimum levels generally acceptable to the College. Departments have the discretion to prescribe higher requirements either for specific courses of study or in specific cases where there are serious doubts as to the abilities of individual students to undertake proposed programmes of study.
Students must make arrangements to take the appropriate test well in advance of the start of their course. Places will not be confirmed and students will not be allowed to register until confirmation of an acceptable result has been received as set out below.
* A first degree taught in English within the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, Guyana, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, West Indies.
* Candidates whose first degree was not taught in English but who have then successfully completed a one-year MSc (or equivalent) course at a UK university.
* A grade of not less than C in English Language in GCSE, IGCSE, GCE `O´ Level or equivalent.
* A grade of not less than C in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
* A pass in the University Test of English for Speakers of Other Languages (UETESOL).
* British Council IELTS Test
A score of not less than 6.5 including a score of 5.0 or better in the written and spoken English elements of the academic test.
* TOEFL
A score of not less than 90 overall in the internet-based test (iBT), to include 24 in Writing and 20 in Speaking; or 600 in the paper-based test (PBT), or 250 in the computer-based test (CBT), both to include a minimum score of 4.5 in the written English.
