This programme aims to develop in-depth understanding of exercise and sport psychology, and to create a common language between European researchers and practitioners in the areas of health, sport performance, youth sports, and recreational sports. Students will tackle such questions as ‘how can sedentary people be motivated to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle?’ and ‘how should individual athletes who suffer from fear-of-failure be counselled to enhance their performance?’.
My profile Applicants are interested in sports, exercise, and physical activity in general, and are motivated to study these domains from a scientific perspective. Sufficient methodological and statistical knowledge is therefore essential. Graduates of the programme will acquire a sound theoretical background in exercise and sports psychology, and they will be able to apply these insights in sports and exercise psychological counselling.
Studying abroadThe programme involves a minimum of one-year full-time study. The first semester takes place at K.U.Leuven, and is followed by a two-week intensive course in the middle of the academic year at one of the network universities. The second semester is organized at another network university within the framework of a K.U.Leuven bilateral contract, and at that point the student works on his or her dissertation.
Assets The programme is organized in cooperation with fourteen European partner-universities. This European dimension allows for a combination of the expertise and knowledge of institutions with courses in exercise and sport psychology at the master’s level, and institutions with individual experts. In terms of student numbers, cooperation at the European level allows countries with only a few interested students to offer the highest possible quality training. In Belgium, only the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences of K.U.Leuven offers this programme.
Career prospectsFor psychologists: sport psychological counselling of individual athletes and teams, promotion of physical activity among sedentary individuals/organizations, etc. For trainers, sport and fitness managers, and technical directors of sport federations: psychological knowledge enriches their professional practice.
The programme consists of four modules totalling sixty ECTS credits.
* Distance learning: nineteen credits and two assessment units (one for exercise and one for sports psychology). The distance learning package is updated regularly by the international board of education.
* A two-week intensive programme: nine credits and two assessment units (one for exercise and one for sport psychology). The intensive programme is organized each year at another network university.
* Class courses: nine credits and minimum three assessment units: The national coordinator and the student decide on the course programme by mutual agreement (i.e., taking into account the student’s preliminary studies).
* Dissertation: twenty-three credits and one assessment unit.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
