The Master of Engineering: Electrical Engineering programme offers a comprehensive set of courses to provide graduate students with the foundation to create the next generation of networked integrated systems. The excellence of the faculty, the breadth of the programme and the opportunity to study in a highly stimulating environment close to the research combine to attract students from all over the world.

Next generation ICT infrastructures will contain complex integrated systems. Tiny devices will be omnipresent in the environment. The backbone will consist of complex servers, routers and complete compute farms. The devices will communicate with each other over wired and wireless networks. The applications that run will be rich in multimedia content. And the complete system needs security and privacy.

Our goal is to teach the students the technical skills and methods such that they can contribute to the creation of this and other future ICT infrastructure. The contents of the courses are state of the art. The faculty that teach also perform their research in the department. This close link between education and research enables students to confront challenging and significant topics while working on problems during their course work or their Master's thesis.

The Electrical Engineering Department (ESAT) is the largest department within the university and has been the starting point of IMEC and many spin-off companies. The faculty also has excellent connections to industry. With the programme's strong link between education and research, employment perspectives are excellent - and not only in Belgium, but also in Europe and the rest of the world. Our graduates are in very high demand.

During the second year, you write a Master's thesis comprising 24 credits. You may choose from a large selection of research topics offered by the members of staff who teach in the programme. For this Master's thesis, you will be supervised individually by a full faculty mentor and a daily supervisor. Depending on your background =and/or research interest, some special technical education courses may be replaced by other Master's level courses. This is decided by
the programme director together with the Master's thesis supervisor on an individual basis.

These changes will be made once you have arrived in Leuven.

COURSES CREDITS

The student takes the core education, chooses an option and some elective courses.
The compulsory courses consist of the core education, the compulsory courses of
the option, the master thesis, and the course “Dutch Language and Cultures”. To obtain the remaining 21 credit points, the student can take courses from the option specific elective courses, and from the broadening education courses. The student makes choices following the rules indicated, and makes sure that his/her program totals (at least) 120 credit points.

Core education 33

* Analysis of Digital Communication Systems 3
* Analog Building Blocks for Signal Processing 6
* Building Blocks for Telecom Systems 3
* Computer Architectures 3
* Design of Digital Platforms 6
* Design of Electronic Circuits 3
* Digital Signal Processing for Communications and Information Systems 6
* Software for Real-Time Control 3

Option 48-57

The student chooses one of the two options: “Circuits” or “Applications”.
Compulsory option courses 39

* The option “Circuits” focuses on the design of analog, digital, and RF electronic circuits and systems.
* The option “Applications” focuses on the design of electronic systems and their application in signal processing, multimedia, security, and telecommunication networks.

Option specific elective courses 9-18

The student chooses at least 9 and at most 18 credit points from the other option
and/or from predefined sets of elective courses. These courses cover topics like
biomedical information technology, data mining, modelling & optimization, power
electronics, security, semiconductor physics & technology, and telecommunications.

Master's thesis 24

Broadening education 6-15

* Dutch Language and Cultures 3
* Additionally, the student chooses at least 3 and at most 12 credits from the University’s offer. The selection must always be approved by the programme director.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The program assumes that students have had an education similar to the one of the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. In he first part (3 semesters) this bachelor is dedicated to fundamental sciences (math, physics, chemistry) combined with some well chosen elementary technical courses, of which electrical engineering, information transmission and informatics are assumed to be indispensable. In the second part of the bachelor the theoretical foundation of the field of electrical engineering is laid starting from the basics of the first part of the bachelor.

This foundation includes 'Electrical Engineering and Electrical Energy', 'Semiconductor Devices', 'Fundamental Electronic Circuits', 'Digital Electronics' and 'Electromagnetic Waves'. In order to develop design experience, the students work in a project class where different groups design and realise a functional block that they have to integrate into a complete and operational system.

Direct access:

* Bachelor of Applied Sciences and Engineering: Electrical Engineering

Non-native English students are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS certificate.

Extra admission requirements:

Students with minimum 3 year (180 credit points) BS program in electrical engineering

* Students with minimum 3 year (180 credit points) BS program in a related field (Physics, Computer engineering, computer science) but with a proven knowledge of the basics of electrical engineering.
* Proof of proficiency in English:
* An IELTS (Academic version) overall band score of at least 6.0.
* A TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 80 (iBT) directly sent to the K.U.Leuven admissions office.
* GRE scores (strongly encouraged)
* Statement of purpose: 1 page to explain your motivation to follow this program.
* Two letters of reference
