MA Fashion Journalism at UCA Epsom develops both a practical and theoretical understanding of fashion and lifestyle journalism in the UK. With a close eye on changing trends in contemporary lifestyle media, emphasis is placed on developing an analytical understanding of the commercial marketplace as well as the rigour of practical journalism.
Key study topics include:
* Study journalistic practice within the fashion and lifestyle context
* Study specific genres of writing including news, catwalk reviews, interviews and trend reports
* Engage with more in-depth genres of journalistic practice
* Further your theoretical understanding of fashion and journalism.
Syllabus (11/12*)
During the course you have the opportunity to develop your practical and theoretical understanding of fashion and lifestyle journalism in the UK. You develop your awareness of changing trends in contemporary lifestyle media and the commercial marketplace, as well as the rigour of practical journalism.
Stage 1
* Research Methods - designed to support and advance the project work produced during the rest of your MA study through a developed investigation of research methods. You will define, articulate and critically reflect upon the research concerns of your own practice during this unit, thereby underpinning and enhancing your knowledge and understanding of the chosen field of study, as well as developing your ability to communicate this in a variety of ways.
* Exploring Fashion & Lifestyle Journalism - introduction to the practical requirements and key principles of journalism including: researching stories, developing ideas and writing in a range of styles and formats suitable to target publications, right through to pitching and selling feature ideas.
Stage 2
* Journalistic Development -you negotiate a number of writing projects that will lead you towards determining an area of interest for your final project and planning their studies for the remainder of the course. This unit also introduces industry professionals, who workshop pieces with you, helping to improve your writing ability and understanding of the contemporary fashion and lifestyle marketplace.
Stage 3
* Final Project (Journalism) - the culmination of your studies and will form a presentation of ideas and concepts developed throughout the course. You should achieve a resolution to previous project units and demonstrate evidence of advanced conceptual, theoretical and technical capability over an extended period of self-directed study. During the unit you are expected to continue to pursue external research consultation with external agencies related to their individual study.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

* A good Honours degree (normally 2:1 or above) or equivalent qualification in your chosen subject or a related discipline, and/or;
* Relevant work experience, demonstrating your ability to study at postgraduate level.
English language requirements
If your first language is not English a certificate is required as evidence that you have an average IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component) or equivalent.
You may be offered a place on a course on the condition that you improve your English language and study skills. We offer two pre-sessional English language courses which can improve your IELTS score by a maximum of 1.0 and 0.5, or equivalent.
Portfolio
You are advised to develop a good series of written work highlighting knowledge, interest, creativity and interest in fashion and/or lifestyle journalism and include this in your submission portfolio.
