Traditionally Mechanical engineering combines mechanical design with energy related subjects and controls. The Mechanical engineer masters modern technology and develops a valuable set of skills which is useful in any type of problem solving and operation control. Mechanical engineers enjoy varied opportunities of after graduation, and are in high demand in most types of industries. A wide range of courses is offered in Reykjavik Universities MSc program in Mechanical Engineering, supporting a specialization in Mechatronics engineering and Thermal fluids engineering.
The requirements for graduating with one of these specializations is described below. All students in RU´s MSc program in mechanical engineering do a Mechanical design course in the fall semester. A trademark of this program is a 14 ECTS Integrated project course taken together with MSc students in Electrical engineering. In this course the students are confronted with a challenging and broad based design task. The students get to collaborate on conceiving, designing, implementing and operating the defined system.
In addition, all MSc students in engineering at Reykjavik University do a Research methods class in the fall semester of their second year, as they embark upon their MSc project.
Students with a background in Vocational Engineering ( is: Tæknifræði ) must take the course Differential equations and numerical analysis. Depending on their background, they may need to take additional science classes.

Mechatronics line
In mechatronics, mechanical design is combined with electronic engineering, computer science and system design. This interdisciplinary field of engineering integrates mechanical systems, sensors and controls with electronic systems and intelligent machines. This line of specialization is at our department run in close symbiosis with a program in electrical engineering with a specialization in mechatronics engineering.
Mandatory core for Mechantronics engineering with Mechatronics specialization. The indexed courses are either mandatory for a subgroup of students, or highly recommended.

Requirements
* Undergraduate degree in engineering, mathematics, chemistry or physics
* Undergraduate courses on Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability, Statistics and Programming
An otherwise promising student who does not satisfy the requirements above may be accepted to the program. In such a case the student is expected to fill the aforementioned requirements during the first year of study. Also a student with a background in science will have to take additional undergraduate engineering courses to become a mechanical engineer.
