Location of Cranfield University

The Advanced Computing Environments and Applications option focuses on the computing infrastructure supporting the rapidly expanding Cloud and grid computing sectors.

It equips students with software engineering and analytic skills required to work with high-performance computing facilities, large data archives, remote sensing instruments and digital libraries, enabling them to work successfully within the grid and Cloud computing industry sector, anywhere in the world.

Students benefit from state-of-the-art specialist equipment, including cloud and Globus platforms, Condor, Grid engine and MPI/PVM and HPC. Courses include Grid and Web Service technologies.

Core modules

Students begin by following a set of five core modules:

* Management for Technology
* Computational Methods
* Computer Graphics/GUIs
* Object Oriented Programming in C++

Specialist Modules

* Fundamentals of Grid Computing and e-Engineering
* Grid Middleware
* Grid Development and e-Engineering Applications (group project)
* High-performance Scientific Computing on the Grid
* Visualisation
* Software Engineering
* Computational Methods

Research Project

With the experience and knowledge gained within the lectures, students are equipped for the MSc research thesis.

Requirements

Entry requirements

Typically a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in computer science and engineering, information technology, communication, networks, or a related discipline. Other qualifications (eg HND or alternative) may be acceptable, provided that there is evidence of sufficient relevant work experience.
