The Master's
The Advanced Master's of Periodontology aims to train students who want to specialise in periodontology and deepen their knowledge in the multi-disciplinary field of dental care. The master programme is combined with the part-time 'Post-graduate Certificate in Periodontology’ that basically consists of the clinical training.
My profile
Applicants have a clear vision of their future as a specialist, who is cooperating with the general dentist and other specialists. Critical scientific reading, understanding of experimental methodologies, statistical analysis and interpretation skills of results constitute the typical profile of a Master of Periodontology.
Study programme
The academic programme, spread over three years (20 credits per year) involves theoretical courses, self-study, preclinics and clinical demonstrations in the field of periodontology. In particular it will provide insight in the specialized techniques and their scientific background in periodontology. Participation in the clinical and laboratory scientific research programmes is also part of the curriculum. The master thesis in the last year consists of 15 of the 20 credits.
Assets
The evidence based and research oriented teaching, the multidisciplinary and integrated treatment planning and the comprehensive approach of patient treatment are characteristics of this Advanced Master's programme, which differentiates it from the initial master programme in Dentistry.
Career prospects
A Master of Periodontology cooperates with the general dentist and other specialists and lends a more specialized service to its patients.
MaM programmes involve seminars, preclinical training and the conduction of a research project. At the end of the programme a "Master's Thesis" should be prepared that consists of an extensive critical review of the literature on a topic related to the field of the MaM programme and/or an extensive report of the results of the research project conducted.
Some MaM programmes (paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, periodontology and endodontology) should logically be combined with an additional part-time clinical training programme that is awarded with a "Postgraduate Certificate" and offers an advanced training in this specific field of dentistry mentioned above for the MaM.
These postgraduate programmes exist only in Dutch and require a profound knowledge of Dutch (equivalent to level 5 of the Institute of Living Languages). Only the combination of the Master after Master programme with the postgraduate programme leads to the final specialism. An additional requirement is that your non-EER dental diploma should be recognized as being equivalent to the Flemish diploma of 'Master of Science in de Tandheelkunde' (=Dentist). For the recognition of a foreign diploma there is an official organization: NARIC. Detailed information can be found on their website: If you cannot proof that you have this equivalence, your application will not be taken under consideration!
Objectives and exit qualifications
The finality of this Academic Master after Master program is to provide holders of the diploma of dentist/oral physician a thorough knowledge and profound insight in one of the clinical disciplines of oral health care. Indeed, the global knowledge cannot be grasped anymore at an advanced level by one individual.
