The Conflict & Dispute Resolution Studies programme is designed to encourage an understanding of the nature and causes of conflict in political, ethnic, community, civil and related environments, and provides an overview of prevailing systems of remedy and redress and dispute resolution including ADR processes such as conciliation, facilitation, ombudsmanship and mediation with reference to the development of such concepts at home and in other jurisdictions, whether statutory or adopted on a voluntary basis.
This programme is of value to those who wish to study non-adversarial dispute resolution processes. Recognised as a significant skill in the management toolbox, ADR (alternative dispute resolution) is now accepted as an untapped resource for reducing the damage caused by disputes which if they become entrenched will threaten business and working relationships.
This Postgraduate Diploma is of particular interest to those, in both the public and private sectors, who wish to study civil mediation and other non-adversarial dispute and conflict resolution processes which are increasingly a part of legislative and management structures in the EU and internationally.
The programme sets out to provide a forum in this area of study and practice, in order to establish standards of excellence and develop ethical standards and codes of conduct in the practice of conflict and dispute resolution that will have far-reaching influence. Through an alliance with Mediation Forum-Ireland those who complete the CDRS programme will have the opportunity to have their names included in the relevant specialist panel of Accredited Mediators.
Students take courses in three units
* Unit 1: Understanding the Nature of Conflict: Aspects and Dynamics of Conflict
* This unit focuses on how conflict arises and the stages in the development of conflicts. It examines the role of power, cultural aspects of conflict, and the causes and consequences of prejudice. It analyses conflict and reconciliation as they are experienced in community, ethnic, corporate, commercial, political, gender, and intra and inter-church contexts.
* Unit 2: Theories and Processes of Conflict and Dispute Resolution
* This unit focuses on principles and processes of conflict resolution, remedy, and redress, as well as developments in restorative justice. It reviews arbitration, adjudication and alternative dispute resolution processes.
* Unit 3: Skills
* This is an integrated theory and skills unit in which students consider how to effectively manage and resolve disputes. They practice the skills necessary to be effective in mediation, facilitation, and negotiation.
Assessment Assessment is based on two 6-8,000 word essays and a practical skills-based assessment, to be completed by 1 August. One essay focuses on theory and philosophy, while the other must relate to an area of specialisation in unit 3. This may be related to a particular work context.
To complete the diploma satisfactorily a mark of 40% must be achieved in each of the three elements of assessment.
