This is an innovative, three-year, part-time programme, which will build on your professional knowledge to develop understanding of the role of language in learning across the curriculum, specifically in working with pupils who speak others languages besides English (EAL learners).

In response to the Government’s growing recognition of the need for specialist EAL teachers, the programme is designed for primary and secondary teachers, normally in the first five years of their careers, and other professionals working in related areas, who want to become leaders in this increasingly important field. It is the only such programme in the region and one of very few in the country.

In this academically rigorous programme, you will use your professional experience to analyse the knowledge needed to be an effective teacher in multilingual contexts and investigate key theoretical issues which underlie good practice. This will enable you to understand and meet the full range of learning needs of multilingual learners and will develop your expertise as a prospective leader in the field of EAL.

The programme can be taken as either a Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters. Postgraduate Diploma students will complete the first two taught modules; those who wish to complete the MA will also undertake the third module, carrying out classroom-focused enquiry and writing a critical study.
Along the lines of the successful MA in Teaching programme, teaching will include a mixture of face-to-face sessions through summer schools and Saturday school meetings and distance learning, which will be supported through the University’s VLE.

Contents

Compulsory modules

Year 1
EAL, Language Diversity and Inclusion: Research and Theory introduces you to EAL in the UK, addressing the social and historical contexts and cross-curricular nature of EAL learning. As well as exploring the relationship between EAL and other areas of language teaching such as TESOL and MFL, and the importance of notions of academic language, you will be introduced to a range of theoretical issues related to language, learning and multilingualism and their implications for learning across the curriculum for all pupils.

Year 2EAL, Language Diversity and Inclusion: Investigating Policy and Pedagogy explores the ways in which EAL has been mediated in research, policy and classroom practice in the UK to date. In particular, you will look at the tensions between the policy goals of promoting diversity and inclusion and ways of researching specific issues in classroom and other learning contexts.

Year 3
EAL, Language Diversity and Inclusion: Classroom-based Enquiry and Critical Study prepares and supports you in carrying out an in-depth study on a topic of special interest to you. You will be introduced to using practitioner focused approaches to classroom based enquiry, such as action research, and will be guided in the construction of an appropriate school based project, which will lead to a 12,000 word critical study.
