The fascination for archaeology is possibly as old as humankind itself, and the growth of this interdisciplinary science is boundless … if you have been bitten by the bug, then make archaeology your proper career! Our programme allows you to specialize and participate in different areas of international research. We will also prepare you for all the aspects of professional practice on and off the field.

My profile

The Master of Archaeology programme is aimed at Flemish and international students with basic archaeological and historical knowledge of the areas and periods studied. Fieldwork experience is also indispensable.

You are required to have:

* Thorough knowledge of archaeological methods, theory, and practice
* Basic knowledge of archaeological data and background, and the latest (methodological) developments in prehistory, the Classical period, Egypt, and the Ancient Near East
* Acquaintance with the interdisciplinarity of this study area, with the relation between humanity, environment, and cultural context as a focus point • Previous fieldwork experience (at least thirty days) consisting of survey, excavation, registration, and interpretation of data
* Basic knowledge and previous experience of research methodology and the ability to demonstrate your research abilities in writing
* Basic knowledge of ICT - previous experience with GIS systems is a plus
* Sufficient knowledge of English allowing you to take the courses of the English programme, to take part in a student colloquium, and to present your research both orally and in writing

You will be able to specialize in the archaeology of prehistory, Egypt and the Near East, and Classical antiquity. Special attention will also be paid to interdisciplinarity. You will learn to present and defend your own research to your fellow students orally and in writing. Moreover, the programme enables you to build upon your practical experience in a coordinating or managerial role.

Career prospects

As a graduate of the Master of Archaeology programme, you will be a highly qualified (field) archaeologist with knowledge of the various aspects of professional life, ranging from literature search and prospecting to excavating, analysing, and publishing results. You will also be able to play a managerial or coordinating role in excavations at home and abroad. As a young researcher, you will additionally be prepared for a career in the academic world. Furthermore, you will have developed sufficient practical and general skills to take up managerial responsibilities in scientific and scholarly institutions, cultural centres, government institutions, or business. Your critical spirit and ability to solve problems, acquired from the programme, will also be assets for a career in the media, journalism, the arts, cultural tourism, and education.
