Transport = Everywhere!
The field of transport, infrastructure and logistics is interconnected with virtually every aspect of our daily lives. Put simply, without transport systems, our complex economies, cities and societies are simply inconceivable. Every day we take the bus, train or our cars and drive over interconnected systems of road infrastructure, rail- or tram networks. We go to shops and buy products that were produced, manufactured and distributed across all continents over all conceivable transport networks, over water, land or via the air. And even within large or small industrial complexes, again transport plays a fundamental role.
Think of the automated baggage handling at international airports, fully automated production chains or automated container terminals at large harbors. Transport is everywhere, 24/7, 365 days of the year! And transport is not just a means to an end in our daily practice, it also influences heavily how we plan our environment and our economy, how politicians determine policies and how you, me and every one make choices about where we live, where we work, which activities we undertake and how we spend our lives
Why TIL?
Clearly, if there is one engineering discipline, which by nature is multi- and interdisciplinary, it is this incredibly broad field of transport, infrastructure and logistics. Unfortunately, it is fragmented into many specialized sub-disciplines, each with their own vocabulary, paradigms and theories. For example, logistical engineers may view an urban transport network as just "another" link in a complex network of supply chains, whereas urban planners may consider transport networks just instrumental in their planning of modern cities and landscapes. Civil engineers on the other hand consider transport networks as the central (vascular) network which enable complex economic, social and spatial activities and processes. Of course, they all have a point. But wouldn’t it be great if urban planners, policy makers and traffic and transport engineers had a common understanding of all these different and vocabularies? The TU Delft MSc Master’s Programme in Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics (TIL) offers exactly this!
TIL = breadth + depth + fun!
TIL is a comprehensive MSc program, which aims to provide graduates with that broad knowledge and skills over the entire TIL domain. That doesn’t imply you specialize in everything! You are a generalist in the first place and you choose one of four specializations, alongside a large number of other courses at your disposal. But throughout the TIL curriculum you are forced to work in interdisciplinary projects and courses, with students who have different backgrounds and specializations. Just like in the real world. For example, you might specialize in policy analysis and spatial planning and work on new sustainable mobility for the Rotterdam area. You will do this project together with students specializing in transport network design, or advanced traffic management and technology, and/or students specialized in automation of container handling. Collaboration over these disciplines is not only necessary; most of all it’s fun!
So how does it work, TIL?
The MSc programme TIL offers you courses and projects to acquire knowledge, insights, and skills in the broad area of traffic (the movement of vehicles), transport (the movement of passengers and freight), infrastructure (roads, railways and harbours) and logistics (the organisation behind freight movements and transhipments both within and between industrial complexes).
First of all you follow a number of joint courses (the so-called fundamentals, the TIL seminars and the TIL interdisciplinary project). Next you choose one of four specializations and further complete your program with a broad list of recommended electives. In doing so, you’ll find yourself in lecture halls and coffee corners in all three participating faculties and even other ones.

The MSc TIL programme offers a comprehensive systems view on the field of transport, infrastructure and logistics by providing both courses and full projects. A major part of the programme (80 EC) consists of courses, that sometimes partly include projects.
There are three types of courses in the programme: fundamentals, specialisations and electives, equally sharing the available credits. All three types contribute to the interdisciplinary character of the the programme: fundamentals contain interdisciplinary fundamentals and both specialisations and electives have an interdisciplinary composition (specialisations are composed out of courses provided by several MSc programmes and the set of elective courses students choose must contain courses from several MSc programmes).
Components
There are three types of courses:
- Fundamentals: course that all students must complete succesfully
Fundamentals together form the basic component of the programme including five compulsory courses, adding up to 27 EC. They give students a broad and systematic insight into the design and analysis of TIL facilities, TIL systems, TIL arenas and their environment. - Specialisations: sets of thematically related courses that students can choose
Specialisations are packages of 26-27 EC including six courses each with a common theme or application domain. Students must, according to their interests, choose one out of four specialisations that are offered in the programme. - Electives: separate courses that students can choose
Elective courses (and also projects) help to satisfy the specific knowledge needs of students. They are available from all contributing MSc programmes, and there is also the possibility to choose courses from other MSc programmes of Delft University of Technology or other universities in the Netherlands. Together the chosen electives must add up to 26 or 27 EC.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The master programme Transport, Logistics and Infrastructure (TIL) is a two year full-time programme in english for students with a bachelor degree who have the right motivation and qualification to further specialise in the field of Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics. It is an advanced programme which requires both a solid knowledge of a technological field or the natural sciences and a basic knowledge of the specific field of Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics.
General requirements
1)
A. A good university BSc degree with good grades on the key courses in a main subject closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying.
Exceptions: Management of Technology, Engineering and Policy Analysis and Science Education & Communication, to which all students holding a technology or science degree may be admitted.

B. A proof that you have nearly completed a BSc programme whose main subject is closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying.

A BSc Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75% of the scale maximum, or, when included, the specific requirements defined for the country in which you obtained (or are in the process of obtaining) your Bachelor’s degree
3)
Proof of English language proficiency (certificates older than two years are not accepted):
- A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 90 (internet-based test). Please note that we only accept the TOEFL internet-based test.
- or IELTS (academic version) overall Band score of at least 6.5.
- or proof that you have passed the University of Cambridge 'Certificate of Proficiency in English' or the University of Cambridge 'Certificate in Advanced English'
As the whole process of collecting information, registering for the tests and receiving the test results may take several months, we advise you to register for the IELTS or TOEFL several months before starting your application.
It is allowed to send us a copy of your test results, please check the application documents for detailed information.
- For EU/EFTA nationals, the English language certificate may be submitted until 1 July provided that all other required hard copy documents are received before the application deadline of 1 April.
- Nationals of the People’s Republic of China only: A Nuffic certificate as proof of your English language proficiency. In order to obtain the Nuffic certificate you will need to take the IELTS or TOEFL internet-based test.
- Only nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempt from the proof of English language proficiency requirement.
4)
A clear and relevant essay in English (2,000 - 3,000 words) addressing the following:
- Your motivation for taking the MSc programme of your choice.
- Why you wish to pursue this programme abroad and/or in the Netherlands in particular.
- Why you are interested in TU Delft.
- If there are optional specialisations in the Master’s programme of your choice: which specialisation(s) interest you most, and why?
- Examples of three Master’s thesis topics that interest you and with an explanation of your particular interest.
- A brief summary (maximum 250 words) of the thesis work or the final assignment done for your Bachelor’s programme, including information on the credits earned, grade, and full workload.
5)
Two reference letters in English, French, German or Dutch:
- one from from a professor or an assistant professor from the faculty from which you graduated.
- one from your employer, if you already have work experience.
If you have not yet graduated, please provide two letters from professors or assistant professors from the faculty at which you are studying.

An extensive résumé (curriculum vitae) written in English.

NVAO independently assesses the quality of higher education in Flanders and the Netherlands. All of TU Delft’s educational programmes are accredited by NVAO and therefore meet the European quality standards. Alongside the national accreditation system, many of TU Delft’s education programmes are recognized as substantially equivalent to the best programmes in the USA by the American Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET).
Funding details
TU Delft offers an array of scholarships, ranging from (partial) tuition waivers to full scholarships covering tuition and living expenses. Some MSc programme-specific scholarships may only be announced on their respective websites.
TU Delft Excellences Scholarships are awarded to admitted students with exceptional promise and outstanding academic achievement. There is typically no separate application procedure. Selected scholarship recipients will be notified directly by the university.
