Programme Description

Computer Engineering is the engineering discipline that deals with the usage and development of software and hardware of computing systems (computers). It covers computers and computing devices from embedded to personal computers, and from mainframes to supercomputers.

Computer engineering is widely considered to be one of the most dynamic fields in terms of market growth. Every year, every person in this world buys at least one product that has been designed by a computer engineer.

The students joining the Computer Engineering Master´s programme will learn the theory and practice of system software, including programming, operating systems, compilers and computer networks.

They will also learn about computer architecture and the implementation and development of computer hardware. The state of the art in design of software tools and methodologies for synthesis, physical design, VLSI, hardware software codesign, systems on chip, testing, and performance analysis will be addressed by the programme as well.

In order to prepare our students to become world-class engineers, we provide them with strong theoretical and practical knowledge. We ensure that our graduates can contribute to the industry, by devoting a large part of the programme to practical software and hardware design experiments and prototyping.

The programme has a duration of two years and starts each year in September. Students are free to schedule the sequence of their courses. For graduation, a total number of 120 credit points (EC) is required. It is recommended that 60 EC are taken each year, and that all compulsory courses are completed in the first year.

The individual study programme consists of the following parts:

  • - A common core worth 32 EC.
  • - Specialisation courses worth at least 28 EC. At least 18 EC need to be taken from the list of specialisation courses. The remaining 10 EC can be chosen from other master programmes offered by EEMCS. There are three recommended specialisation profiles: Embedded Systems, General Purpose and High Performance Systems, and Distributed Systems and Networks.
  • - A free elective space worth 15 EC that the student must spend on study units like a research task, an international exchange programme, an internship, an interfaculty specialisation profile or courses offered by other universities or by the Delft University of Technology; in the latter case, preferably courses from another department, or social studies courses. Alternatively, this space may be used for homologation courses. These are courses that students can take to acquire knowledge missing from their previous BSc degree programme.
  • - A thesis project worth 45 EC.

The MSc programme is organised by the following laboratories:

  • - Circuits and Systems
  • - Computer Engineering
  • - Parallel and Distributed Systems
  • - Software Engineering (SE)
  • - Network Architectures and Services (NAS)

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

In addition, candidates are expected to have:

  • A Grade Point Average (GPA) for the BSc programme of at least 75% of the scale maximum.
  • A Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of at least 450 verbal/550 analytical/650 quantitative.
  • Proof of proficiency in the English language:
    • a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test), or
