These part-time courses were set up in 1996 by Professor Chris Bell in order to provide professionals in the workplace, and health & exercise science graduates, with an opportunity to revisit, revise and learn, more physiology with a focus on exercise.
This course aims to provide training for professional development of physical educators and health care workers who employ exercise therapy. In addition this course would be ideal for those interested in gaining experience in assessment of exercise performance, and exercise applications in training and research. Applicants are expected to hold a good primary degree with some grounding in biology. Preference may be given to candidates who are employed in a relevant field.
The aims of the programme are threefold:
* Firstly, to enhance knowledge and understanding of; the physiology of human body systems, how the body responds to acute and chronic exercise, and the principles of exercise prescription in a variety of settings.
* Secondly, to enhance practical skills; relevant to investigating human physiology, as well as in the use of modern technologies for monitoring and assessment of exercise performance.
* finally, to provide experience and skills required to conduct good quality exercise research.
In year one, instruction will consist of approximately 300 contact hours devoted to taught modules comprising 60 ECTS. All modules will provide a focus on normal physiological function, pathological conditions and related aspects of exercise. Running themes throughout the course will encourage practical applications to human exercise, basics of data acquisition, recording and analysis, and critical evaluation of published works. As far as possible modules are scheduled to take place on only two days per week (Mondays and Fridays).
In the first year, students are assessed progressively in all modules through a variety of formal reports, essays, practical work and through final written examinations (two 3-hour papers) held during the Annual examination period (May/June). All students must attend a viva voce examination following the end of year written papers to conclude the assessment process.
Students who have received an overall honors grading (>60%) in the first year may elect to undertake a second research-based year to achieve a M.Sc. Students who do not progress into year two of the course but pass (>50%) the first year will be offered a postgraduate diploma in exercise physiology and be required to exit the programme.
The second year of the course will consist of a research project on some aspect of exercise physiology which will comprise 30 ECTS. Projects will be chosen in consultation with an expert Supervisor, with consideration being given to individual candidates' interests. Practical work will be expected to occupy of the order of 300 hours over the year and assessment is via a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words. Organisation of the research will be a matter of negotiation between student and Supervisor, dependent on the time commitments of each.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testTo be eligible for admission, applicants must hold a tertiary qualification with some grounding in human biology, and it is desirable for applicants to have been employed for at least two years in the field of physical education, exercise prescription, or as a health professional involved in patient management.
Candidates with insufficient experience in human biology may be required to undertake a lecture unit in basic biological/physiological principles before their acceptance into the programme can be confirmed. In such instances, The Department of Physiology can provide some advice and recommendations on suitable units.
