If you are an architect, designer and strategic planner (with theory and practice, education and experience), and would like to learn the skills to become proactive in the design of cities of the future, this course is ideal. It takes a new look at the potentials of the landscape in the context of contemporary urbanism, with considerations of spatial form and programme central to the course.
The course team has a commitment to sustainability, and the course develops interdisciplinary and team collaboration in the growing fields of urban and landscape design.
You will study landscape materials and technique, landscape and urbanism theory and practice. You will also develop your design and built environment research skills and have the opportunity to choose two option modules from a range across the Faculty.
The landscape and urbanism design projects will address live briefs at a range of scales, from the strategic to detailed site-specific intervention, while the masters project will develop a personal manifesto and critical proposition and enables you to develop a personal interest to support future career or research ambitions.
Please note that this is an indicative list of modules and is not intended as a definitive list.
Core modules
* Landscape Materials and Technique
* Landscape and Urbanism Practice
* Landscape and Urbanism Theory
The module seeks to develop a theoretical grounding and literacy in landscape design and urbanism. The subject area overlaps with others such as architecture, urban design and planning, landscape architecture – texts are drawn from each of these disciplines.
Much of the synthesis of the material will rely on seminar discussion and independent study. The module focus is the bringing together of different disciplines with the 'landscape' (rather than the 'built form') as forum for discussion.
You participate in seminar presentations and reviews of critical texts, and prepare an individual manifesto or essay for presentation.
We also aim to develop this module as a short course/public lecture programme.
