Location of University of Dublin Trinity College

This course is run jointly by the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street and University of Dublin, Trinity College. The programme is broadly based and is designed for medical scientists and medical graduates seeking a career in pathology. The course deals with the biological basis of disease and addresses the impact of molecular methods on diagnostic clinical pathology.

The aim of this course, run jointly with Dublin Institute of Technology in Kevin Street, is to provide postgraduate education in medical laboratory science for those wishing to pursue a career in this field.

It provides an advanced programme in the molecular basis of disease including the etiology, pathogenesis and investigation of the disease process. I.T. and management as applied to Medical Laboratories are also covered. Students develop research skills by partaking in an advanced practical project in their chosen area of specialisation. The course is available on a block-release basis and on a full-time basis.

Graduates of the course are eligible for the award of MSc in Molecular Pathology of the University of Dublin, Trinity College. Joint award status with DIT is being sought.

Graduates have the opportunity to take up senior posts in the clinical pathology service, in biomedical industries and research institutes

* Students also undertake a laboratory based research project.

Assessment

A portfolio of work will be presented by each student including, two essays, literature reviews, paper critiques, workshop reviews, oral presentations, case studies and a poster. An examination at the end of the second year will be on the selected specialist topic. Students must also satisfactorily complete their research project.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

* to hold at least a second-class honours degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent

Or

* have passed the Part I Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), London, Part II Fellowship of the IBMS.
* applicants for the part-time course must be employed in an appropiate post in a hospital, veterinary, or other suitable laboratory. Applicants may be interviewed.
* applicants must have access to all of the facilities necessary to undertake a major practical project, to be carried out in their place of work.
* it is also important that students have a facility for release from their employment to attend this course.
