Location of University of Dublin Trinity College

The Department of Anatomy offers a taught MSc course in Sports and Exercise Medicine. This is a one year full-time course for medical doctors and chartered physiotherapists, preferably with one year´s post graduation experience. Places are limited to 8 - 12 students.

Aims * To present a scientific basis for the study of all aspects of Sports and Exercise Medicine;
* To outline a comprehensive programme for injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation;
* To define guidelines for the scientific monitoring and training of athletes;
* To enable participants to provide training advice for various age groups;
* To expose participants to a wide range of specialties relevant to sport and exercise medicine;

and * To develop research techniques applicable to sports and exercise medicine.

A Master of Science degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine is awarded following the passing of written, oral and clinical examinations and the acceptance of a dissertation based on practical research work. [The course is accredited equivalence to FSEM Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine United Kingdom and Ireland by the Intercollegiate Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine - although this is not recognised for progression in Specialty Training in the UK.] Marks are allocated on the basis of 67% continuous assessment and end of year written examinations and 33% dissertation.


Contents

The MSc is the equivalent of 90 ECTS and is comprised of the following modules:

* ECTS Pure and Applied Anatomy 10
* ECTS Sports and Exercise Physiology 10
* ECTS Clinical Sports Medicine 10
* ECTS Musculoskeletal Assessment 10
* ECTS Research Methodology 10
* ECTS Maximising Sports Performance 10
* ECTS Research Dissertation 30

Incourse and official end of term examinations of ECTS units consist of:

(a) Written examination - MCQs and SAQs
(b) Practical examinations - competence in musculoskeletal examination techniques, clinical cases and athletic assessment.

All ECTS modules must be passed (>50%). No compensation is allowed between written papers and clinical examinations. The dissertation can only be undertaken when interim assessments have been completed successfully. The degree is externally monitored and examined.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Applicants should be well-qualified medical graduates and chartered physiotherapists with minimum upper second class honours degree and preferably with one year´s post qualification experience. Preference is given to applicants with a strong sporting background or involved in sports service provision.

Medical doctors must be registered for work in Ireland with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) and chartered physiotherapists with Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) or the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). Proof of indemnity insurance will be necessary. Selection will be made by application and/or interview.
