The Aim of this one year R.C.N. programme is to educate students to become competent and professional practitioners in the delivery of care to children within a family centered framework and to ensure there are sufficient qualified Children´s Nurses graduating annually to meet the needs of the Irish Health Service.
The course is designed to equip nurses to deliver primary health care, acute, rehabilitative and palliative care as required and to foster the process of continuing education and research in paediatric nursing practice. Students must be registered, or be eligible to register, in one of the three disciplines in nursing- general, psychiatry, intellectual disability nursing and 6 months post registration experience since initial registration is required. Students must have a Diploma in Nursing, OR a TCD access to Nursing programme OR a Degree in Nursing.
Objectives * To create a flexible, holistic and evidence based nursing programme reflective of the needs of children and their families in both health and Illness.
* To create a programme which will equip students to assess, plan, intervene, evaluate and review care within a family centered framework.
* To ensure that students acquire the psychomotor, affective and cognitive skills to deliver competent professional nursing care.
* To ensure that students are equipped to deliver responsive, holistic, and professional and evidence based care to a multicultural and diverse range of clients in a variety of health care settings.
* To create a programme which will focus on prior learning and transferable knowledge and skills in Professional, Legal, Ethical, Reflective and caring aspects of Children´s Nursing.
* To facilitate the concept of evidence based learning and practice and to foster the concept of life long learning and professional competence.
* To ensure the needs of children and their families are met by suitably qualified nurses in the future.
* Ensure students are facilitated in the development of their professional expertise in areas including cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains.
* Foster in the student the development and utilization of holistic, responsive and caring attitudes.
This one year (52 week) programme will consist of the following components:
1. Theory 12 weeks (360 hours)
2. Annual Leave 4 weeks
3. Clinical Placement: 36 weeks (1404hours) as follows:
* Medical & Surgical Paediatric nursing (Including infants under one year) 22 weeks
* High Dependency Paediatric Nursing 2 weeks
* Accident & Emergency Paediatric Nursing 4 weeks
(Including O.P.D.)
* Specialist Paediatric Nursing: 8 weeks including

This programme carries 60 European Credits Note: the preliminary ECTS credit weighting for this programme may need to be revised upwards in the context of the ongoing implementation of the National Qualifications Framework in the university sector.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

The Department of Health and Children have allocated 15 places annually for this programme.
