The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers the following taught Masters in Science in Nursing. The aim of this course is to strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the nurses attending, thus enabling them to fulfil their highest potential in both their academic and professional lives.
The course is firmly grounded in a body of knowledge that will promote excellence in the participant´s area of practice. Furthermore, it is designed to achieve an academically robust education for the participants and the various modules offered develop and complement subjects undertaken at Degree and Postgraduate Diploma level as required by the curriculum.
If eligible, students undertaking the MSc in Nursing can also undertake a module entitled Advancing Clinical Skills: Clinical Diagnostic Skills for Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Emergency Nursing (in association with Emergency Directorates St James Hospital). Students who wish to register with An Bord Altranais as Nurse Tutors may undertake the Clinical Health Sciences Education (CHSE) strand of the programme (pending approval by An Bord Altranais).
The philosophy of the MSc in Nursing reflects the core philosophy of the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Students on this programme are recognised as practicing, professional nurses with a resource of clinical and educational skills and knowledge that will enhance their learning at this advanced stage of their personal and professional pathway. Peer and self-directed learning are encouraged and facilitated and students are enabled to reflect, inquire, critique, problem-solve, evaluate and debate professional and practice issues in an academically robust manner. Students are empowered to generate evidence that will improve practice and are guided and supported through that process.
The aim of this course is to provide a solid academic base to the understanding and development of nursing care. Graduates, in applying their learning, can be expected to provide quality nursing care and promote and develop excellence in their practice setting.

Year One
* NU7004 Advancing the Theoretical Foundations for Nursing and
* NU7013 Theory and Practice of Research Methods for Healthcare and
* NU7005 Ethics and Law in Healthcare and
* NU7007 Health Services Management
* plus one of the following
* NU7801 Facilitating Learning in the Practice Environment or
* and NU7008 Developing the Professional Role
Year Two
* NU8004 Advancing Professional Theory and Practice
* plus one of the following
* NU8001 Advanced Qualitative Research Methods or
* NU8002 Advanced Quantative Research Methods and
* Major Dissertation
The aim of this course is to strengthen and develop the knowledge and skills of participants. The course covers the theory of practice, education, administration and research, and commences with one full study week followed by one study day per week or the equivalent throughout the academic year. There is a written assessment associated with each module of the course. In addition successful completion of a research dissertation is a requirement in order to achieve the award of M.Sc. Nursing.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* Registration as a nurse with An Bord Altranais or in the case of international applicants, be registered as a professional nurse who is entitled to practise as a qualified or registered nurse in their own country.
* An honors degree in nursing or a related discipline or equivalent professional and academic qualification.
* For the Advanced Nurse Practice in Emergency Nursing strand of the course, students are required to have five years experience in emergency nursing in the last eight years and are also required to hold a post-basic qualification in emergency nursing.
* For the Clinical Health Sciences Education strand of the course, students are required to have three years clinical experience since first registration which must include experience of interaction with students or learners.
* Or otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.
All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present one of the following qualifications in the English language:
* IELTS: Grade 6.5
* TOEFL: 88 iBT, 230-computer based, 570 paper based
* Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Grade C
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Grade C
