The M.Sc. in Hospital Pharmacy provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake all aspects of hospital pharmacy including clinical pharmacy, dispensary and drug distribution, administration and management, aseptic compounding, pharmacoeconomics and medicines information.
The M.Sc. in Hospital Pharmacy consists of a practice-based teaching programme complemented by lectures, tutorials and workshops. The course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake all aspects of hospital pharmacy. Subjects covered include therapeutics, pharmacoeconomics, purchasing skills, good manufacturing practice and aseptics, immunology and biotechnology. Management issues as they relate to hospital pharmacy and the broader context of healthcare systems are also addressed.
This is a two-year, part-time course with lectures and tutorials taking place on one half day per week in central locations. Courses are conducted on a biennial basis. Eligible candidates must hold a first or second-class honors degree in pharmacy and be registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland. All students are based as full-time pharmacists in approved participating hospitals in Ireland.

The M.Sc. is divided into 9 modules, which cover the various practice areas of hospital pharmacy plus a research module. Lectures and tutorials taking place on one half day per week in a central location.
Module 1 - Practice of Hospital Pharmacy
is a broad based module, where all course components are drawn together i.e. core clinical skills, medicines information, and dispensary functions.
Module 2, 3 & 4 - Medical therapeutics I & II & Surgical therapeutics
deal with the major therapeutic areas e.g. cardiology, respiratory etc. and are underpinned by the practice-based Hospital Clerkship rotations/attachments. Students undergo a competency based training programme to assure competence in delivery of patient care, problem solving and personal competencies.
Module 5 - Aseptic & Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
The importance of aseptic compounding as it pertains to hospital pharmacy is reflected in this module.
Module 6 & 7 - Medical Specialities Part I & II
deal with specialist areas e.g. renal, intensive care, neurology, psychiatry, paediatrics. The importance of immunology & the emerging role of new and sophisticated biotechnology products is also highlighted.
Module 8 - Health Services Management
includes quality management, human resources and risk management. General management issues pertaining to personal development such as leadership, organisational and communication skills, negotiating skills, conflict management and teamwork are also covered. Pharmacoeconomics and its various applications are also covered here.
Module 9 - Research Module
aims to provide an understanding of research design and methodologies, and incorporates a practical statistics programme, with an emphasis on hospital pharmacy research and data analysis.
Assessment Assessment of the course includes written examinations, written assignments, oral presentations, an OSCE and a written dissertation (approximately 20,000 words in length). For the award of the M.Sc., candidates must satisfy the examiners in both the taught and research components of the course. A viva-voce examination will be conducted by the External Examiner.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
