TU Delft's MSc Programme in Design for Interaction focuses on the way in which people and products interact. How does a user experience and use a product? What is his understanding of that product? And is it the design of the product that determines or influences these responses, the needs and abilities of the user, or the environment in which it is used and its social context?
The goal of the programme is to educate designers in such a manner that they will acquire a profound understanding of what people do with products and expect from the products they use in everyday life. It aims to produce graduates who are able to design products appropriate to users’ needs and expectations.
To gain the skills and understanding required to design for interaction, you will pursue a multi-disciplinary course of study covering topics which include ergonomics, aesthetics, interaction design, psychology and sociology. You will also learn how to involve users in analysing needs, and study the use of technology in the design process. Visualisation and conceptualisation play an important part in this; the consideration of the interaction between people and products. The development, testing and refinement of prototypes also figure prominently in the programme.
This Master’s Programme is closely connected to the faculty research portfolio Towards sustainable well-being. The portfolio contains:
3 foundational programmes
3 applied programmes (with a strong connection to IPD):
Altogether, about 100 research staff are active in these six programmes.
The Master’s programmes often include both academic coursework, where the emphasis is on the consideration of ideas and theories developed through cutting-edge research in the portfolio, as well as opportunities for students to participate in related research. Besides Master’s specific research projects, in which students can often decide to place a greater or lesser emphasis on research, there are courses on research methods, research electives connected to specific portfolio projects, and elective individual or group research projects.
Within the foundational programmes, both long-term and short-term research projects are embedded in, or linked to, the Master's specialisation Advanced Automotive Design. Subjects range from sustainable form and the meaning of form in automotive brand identities to the development of design management methodology.
The main focus of the research is on the human product interaction during professional product use. The emphasis is on error-free task fulfillment in complex multi-user situations. The goal is to generate design requirements and methods for the design of products so that these products do not cause complaints during use. The requirements should anticipate the implementation of these products on a large scale and daily use. One goal of this research is to obtain insight in physical problems for the user such as pressure sores, RSI, low back pain, discomfort and lipoatrophia semicircularis. Understanding the underlying medical aspects of these complaints and the anatomical deviations of the different users form the basis for biomechanical modelling.
Another focus is on designing a set of products that provide an optimal human-product interaction necessary to guarantee high quality in surgical performance; this is realized in the project Surgeon’s Cockpit (SC). To develop the Surgeon’s Cockpit around seven PhD projects are described. These projects can be complemented with graduation projects and research projects.
The Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering’s programmes are international in character, and participants in the programme can take advantage of the Faculty’s many associations with leading design institutes around the world to gain international experience.
Within the Integral Design Project, there are possibilities for students to do Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) projects in developing countries.
The Faculty of IDE has formed a Design Research Alliance with seven other top design schools:
Members of this alliance collaborate on design research and organise design research workshops.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationFor the MSc program Design for Interaction, a portfolio of work samples is required from all applicants. The portfolio should consist of a minimum of three and a maximum of twenty work samples. Quality is more important than quantity. A portfolio should show the whole range and variety of previous training, development and experience and should emphasise your knowledge of the subject for which you are applying. You should submit work that represents your personal interests and your abilities.
General requirements

NVAO independently assesses the quality of higher education in Flanders and the Netherlands. All of TU Delft’s educational programmes are accredited by NVAO and therefore meet the European quality standards. Alongside the national accreditation system, many of TU Delft’s education programmes are recognized as substantially equivalent to the best programmes in the USA by the American Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET).
TU Delft offers an array of scholarships, ranging from (partial) tuition waivers to full scholarships covering tuition and living expenses. Some MSc programme-specific scholarships may only be announced on their respective websites.
TU Delft Excellences Scholarships are awarded to admitted students with exceptional promise and outstanding academic achievement. There is typically no separate application procedure. Selected scholarship recipients will be notified directly by the university.
