For each module, a student will be assigned to a tutor group with a lecturer. He/she will combine the on-campus roles of academic and personal tutor for the duration of the module. The tutor will organise tutor groups, moderate online discussions, and receive work for marking. As well as dealing with specific queries you may have in relation to the module of study, your tutor can offer general advice and is usually the first port of call for advice. He/she will usually be available by email, phone, as well as within the learning environment. You are always welcome to visit if you are in London. You also have the option of conducting real-time online discussions in the 'chat' function of the learning environment, or by internet telephony, e.g. Skype, if your tutor uses that software.
The entire programme is delivered to students via a customised online learning environment, a teaching and learning platform that students access through their normal web browsers. It is available 24/7/365, except for short notified maintenance downtimes. The online learning environment provides a 'one-stop shop' for programme information, modules, supporting materials and discussion forums. There are many tools to help students organise their learning and interact with other students. Students also submit their assessed work via the online learning environment.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* Students should possess a first or upper second class honours degree (or GPA must be above 3.25) in history, international relations, political science, economics or other appropriate subject of the University of London or an equivalent qualification from another British or overseas university. Degrees in other subjects, or candidates with lower awards than those above, may be considered by the Admissions Tutor. Strong references and personal statements are an important part of the application, as is relevant working experience.
* An alternative professional or other qualification obtained by a formal examination may be approved. Prior experiential learning can also be taken into consideration by the admissions panel. Where alternative professional or other qualifications are not available, evidence will be required that a candidate can undertake academic study to the level required. If necessary, candidates will be asked to submit a sample of written work.
* Overseas students whose first language is not English must meet the formal standard of English which are either IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency. The School of Social Science and Public Policy minimum entry requirements for our graduate programmes are detailed in a table on the English Language Requirements webpage.
