This course is available full-time or part-time. It provides postgraduate training for clinicians and medical scientists in the theoretical basis of medical ultrasound and ultrasound scanning and diagnostic skills. The course offers three modules, each running independently in their respective departments:

* echocardiography
* obstetrics and gynaecology
* vascular

Aims The aim of the course is to provide clinicians and medical scientists with intensive training in both the theoretical basis of medical ultrasound and the required scanning and diagnostic skills in the specialities of either echocardiography, general ultrasound or vascular ultrasound.

A research project is an integral part of the course and is included to provide the student with a training in research practice and the opportunity to make an original contribution to the chosen area of research.

Work required

For the full-time course option, students are expected to attend all formal teaching sessions and three days a week in the ultrasound clinics. One day per week is allocated to private study but students are expected to undertake private study of at least 2-3 hours additionally in their own time.
For the part-time course option (vascular only), students are expected to attend the formal teaching sessions at the Hammersmith and to spend three days per week in an appropriate ultrasound clinic. The equivalent of one day per week is allocated to private study.

Career Prospects

This course is expected to enhance the career of those working in medical ultrasound research, diagnostic work or teaching.

Contents

The course comprises Part I: core modules and Part II: specialist modules, taught over the first two 12-week terms and an 8-month clinical or laboratory based research project. Students will be provided with advanced knowledge and clinical and laboratory training in the field of medical ultrasound. The core module will include the study of the physics of ultrasound, pulse echo techniques, transducer and equipment design, haemodynamics, Doppler, duplex and colour flow imaging, bio-effects and safety.

The clinical speciality modules will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject in echocardiography, general ultrasound and vascular ultrasound. The students will spend three days per week in ultrasound clinics in one or more of the following centres: the Hammersmith, Charing Cross, St Mary’s Hospitals, training to reach an agreed proficiency or competency level of scanning and diagnosis.

The students on the two year part-time course will attend Part I and Part II lectures, practicals and tutorials at the Hammersmith Campus for one day a week in the first year and will be required to attend an accredited hospital ultrasound clinic three days per week for both the first and second years. In the second year the student will concentrate on the dissertation and will be required to attend the Hammersmith Campus at least one day per week.

Teaching methods The taught module will include:

* Formal lectures (from Department of Imaging staff, experts from other Imperial College/ Hammersmith Hospital Departments and other London Institutions)
* Practical demonstrations and laboratory practicals
* Tutorials and seminars

Formal teaching and practical sessions will take up to about 24 hours per week. In addition, students will also be expected to attend weekly research presentations within the Department, be invited to guest seminars in the Department and formal Imperial College lectures where appropriate, including Short Courses, such as the Hammersmith Echocardiography Course. There will also be a meeting of the MSc Journal club at the end of each term, where each student will give a critical review of a scientific paper.

During their research project students will receive tuition via discussion from their supervisor and other laboratory staff. Current departmental research projects include the use of contrast agents, three and four-dimensional imaging and image and signal processing. For part-time students the research project may be carried out in their host institution, provided the course organisers are satisfied with local arrangements for supervision and facilities.
