This course is available full-time or part-time. It provides an opportunity for gaining a clearer understanding of changing roles in surgical education and for leadership of these new career developments. You will gain a sound theoretical background to the principles of surgical education in its broadest sense (including any interventionist discipline, from radiology to obstetrics), a rigorous academic training, an introduction to appropriate research methods and practice, and the opportunity for intellectual growth and development within a challenging, stimulating yet supportive environment.

Programme features

* Core modules and an options choice
* Taught in several week-long blocks
* Use of innovative simulated training equipment
* The opportunity to learn appropriate research skills and carry out a research project under supervision
* Discussion with tutors and fellow participants to enhance understanding and critical reasoning
* Experiential learning and reflection to help bring together theory and practice and develop professional judgement in the area of education and training
* Use of learning technology to support learning and to share information
* Examination by means of submitted work and the use of coursework
* An opportunity to focus on education and training in specific contexts and for specific purposes
* Expert tutors who are practitioners and researchers in the field
* An introduction to key literature and research, with the reading of a selection of this material built into pre and post module periods
* Practical training in a range of educational techniques, e.g. for teaching in the theatre or assessing psychomotor skills

The programme develops new areas of teaching to reflect contemporary research and scholarship, and ensures that the themes of surgery and education are always linked. It aims to attract highly motivated UK and overseas students who are seeking a good basis from which to assume more responsibility and take on a leadership role in this rapidly growing field (in deaneries, surgical colleges, school of surgery, universities or hospitals), and those who intend to go on and study for a PhD.

Contents

Teaching is organised into six core modules and an options module. The content mentioned below is indicative only.

Module1: Policy and context of surgical education

This module includes orientation and induction to Imperial and studying for the MEd and addresses key issues within healthcare and social policy which impact upon surgical education.

Module 2: Theory and practice of learning and teaching 1

This module introduces a range of fundamental educational ideas, theories and principles. It forms the educational underpinning for the whole programme. Some basic teaching techniques are modelled and practised. (Exemption from this module is possible for those with certain entry qualifications.)

Module 3: Theory and practice of learning and teaching 2

This module builds on the material covered in ‘Theory and practice of learning and teaching 1’, consolidating and extending those principles and considering their application to practical teaching techniques within a range of clinical settings (with special reference to surgery).

Module 4: Theory and practice of technology & simulation in surgery & education

This module addresses specific issues relating to the use of technology (both surgical and educational) and simulation, building on the foundations laid in earlier modules.

Module 5: Assessment and appraisal

This module provides an overview of the purposes and application of assessment within learning and specifically within surgical education, together with an understanding of the range of assessment techniques available and the rationale for selecting them.

Module 6: Research methods (6a) and dissertation (6b)

Research methods form a taught element within the module (6a). This part of the module provides an overview of research methodology in surgical education. The skills that are learned are consolidated by practical experience in designing, constructing and presenting a research project by dissertation (6b). The research project forms approximately one third of the programme and participants have an individually assigned supervisor for its duration.

Module 7: Options Modules

Normally participants study one module selected from the following options:

A. Surgical Technology
B. Health Management
C. History and Archaeology of Medicine and Disease

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
