The Department of Life Sciences embraces the full breadth of modern life science activity and comprises one of the largest life science groups in Europe, with approximately 100 academic staff, 200 research staff, and 400 postgraduate students. The Department has an outstanding international reputation for research, being home to several major research centres and with the majority of research being graded as world leading or internationally excellent in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.

We also have excellent facilities for postgraduate research and for advanced taught courses in a wide range of subjects considered to be essential aspects of the life sciences. As a recognised centre of excellence in both training and research, we receive one of the highest levels of funding in the country. This enables us to support a large number of research groups with a diversity of research interests.

This is a one-year research-based postgraduate course based at the Silwood Park Campus. It comprises a comprehensive lecture and seminar series together with two 18-week research projects. The course equips science graduates with the necessary skills to proceed to a PhD and an established career in academic, government or non-governmental organisations engaged in research into biodiversity, its protection or exploitation.

On the course you will gain broad experience in current whole-organism research and strong theoretical, laboratory and field research skills. Silwood Park Campus, with its large, research-active faculty, state-of-the-art equipment, and wide links to academic researchers and conservation professionals in the UK and abroad, provides ideal facility for the course.
