You already know the developments in Information and Communication Technology from the inside. You want to further professionalize your knowledge and skills in this rapidly changing field.

The Computer Science masters programmes are specialized. They are not about basic knowledge and skills in a broad area. They are about pushing boundaries; to gain (often relatively small) new insights, generally only in a small area. But each change contributes to the strength of the Computer Science field. You have to understand in detail what is going on at the edge of your field. There is a great variety of things that can slow down progress. Physics may seem to work against you, complexity and lack of proper analysis tools may be a hindrance, and of course all sorts of human factors can be a challenge. You have to be aware of methods and techniques that are available to solve the problems you encounter. And sometimes you simply have to get lucky: look at the obstacle that is in your way from the right perspective, and then you realize it is not an obstacle at all. There is a skill to develop here, one of the strong points of the creative expert is that he gets lucky more often than others.

Specialities:

Computer Security:

Our society increasingly depends on ICT for everyday activities, both at work and in our private lives. As a consequence we have become ever more vulnerable to failure and abuse of these digital infrastructures. Regularly, breaches of security make headlines and security is becoming an increasingly important requirement for ICT technology. It is even becoming a selling point for this technology as can be seen for example by Microsoftâs focus on the security features of their operating system Windows. Thus, it should not be surprising that there is an increased demand for trained computer security experts in industry, applied research and academia. Security is not only technical: it is a multidisciplinary field that has legal, regulatory and societal aspects too. This makes security research particularly challenging. It covers the area ranging from mathematics and electronics via computer science to social science and law. This masterâs specialization also has a programme within the Kerckhoffs institute for Computer Security, a cooperation between three main computer security groups, at the UT, Tu/e and RU.

Wireless and Sensor Systems:

Wireless and Sensor Systems addresses a new paradigm for bringing the flexibility of information technology to bear in every aspect of daily life. It foresees that people will be surrounded by embedded and flexibly (wirelessly) networked systems that provide easily accessible yet unobtrusive support for an open-ended range of activities, to enrich daily life and to increase productivity at work. These systems contain a mixture of hardware and software: their scope may be as simple as a sensor, or as complex as a portable device, or even an entire building or city. Cooperation is a necessity, to perform their tasks with sufficient quality or efficiency, and to reach the required functionality and support real time interactions. The specific nature of these systems require them to be open, scalable, adaptable and dependable, while integrating heterogeneous devices ranging from tiny actuators to larger computers. WiSe studies not only the fundamentals of wireless and sensor systems, but also the context of the sensor systems. To this end, WiSe is a multidisciplinary and application oriented programme where you come in contact with different (technical and non-technical) disciplines.

Information Systems Engineering:

Organizations are now vitally dependent on their information systems, and the high demands placed on these systems require skilled technical specialists. Information Systems Engineering graduates are experts that can be found at all stages of a distributed information systemâs lifecycle (requirement analysis, architecture design, realization and maintenance). The information systems of nowadays organizations manage large volumes of internal information, including structured data, multimedia data or geographic information. These systems encompass workflow, groupware and e-business processes and are often distributed across organizational units and physical locations. Information system engineers are able to design, combine and configure basic software components, such as database management systems, transaction processing monitors, workflow management systems and middleware. They know how to define a system which an organization can depend without giving rise to any vulnerability.

Software Engineering:

The size and complexity of modern software systems require an effective approach during all phases of software development in order to guarantee the desired quality factors, such as correctness, adaptability, reusability, reliability and efficiency. Software design includes a number of phases, ranging from domain analysis to the architectural design, implementation, testing and maintenance. Accordingly, graduates have a firm grasp of object-oriented and aspect oriented modeling, programming languages, validation and verification techniques and integrated development environments. They are familiar with software engineering issues, for example, model-driven software development, system validation and software quality trade-off analysis. These software engineering experts are prepared to conceive, design, develop and evaluate applications in real world industrial projects using tried-and-tested, mature techniques such as aspect weaving, model transformations, model checking and emerging approaches such as soft computing. This type of work is often performed in an international setting, involving a high degree of interaction among practitioners, peers and international researchers.

Methods and Tools for Verification:

Many organizations have separate departments for the quality analysis of (software) systems. For instance to verify hardware designs (Intel), automated analysis of device-driver software (Microsoft), certification of safety-critical systems (railway infrastructure) or the dependability analysis of mission-critical systems (ESA). This makes software analysis, construction and optimization an active research area. With this masterâs specialization you learn to develop and use methods and tools for modeling and analyzing software systems, in order to determine their performance, dependability and security. The MTV Master is targeted towards ambitious computer science students, who want to become validation engineers, who know a broad range of validation techniques and tools, and know when and how to apply these techniques and tools within a systemâs life cycle, and/or researchers, who want to do theoretical and foundational research in the realm of formal methods, and/or tool builders, who are able to implement formal theories into working tools, which then can assist system- and validation engineers in developing correct systems.
