Tanaka Business School undertakes advanced teaching and research in the fields of finance, entrepreneurship, innovation and healthcare. Studying at the School places you at the heart of Imperial College London. In addition to the Imperial MBA programmes we offer a suite of MSc courses in Management, Risk Management and Financial Engineering, International Health Management, Finance and Actuarial Finance. We also have a thriving Doctoral programme and distance learning MBA.

The full-time MBA course is a one-year (50-week) intensive course. Each year we take approximately 50 students from a variety of backgrounds, both cultural and academic. The learning methodology incorporates the full range of lectures, tutorials, student presentations, guest speakers, individual and syndicate group coursework, examinations and projects. Most students choose the Imperial MBA either to leverage their position within an organisation or to bring about a career change by industry or function. Students have an average of seven years of work experience prior to starting the programme.

Basic managerial concepts are followed by study of company functions, leading on to business environment and strategy. Students then proceed to the integrative modules designed as applications in which to practice core learning. Following this, students then choose six electives out of a choice of 25 and complete the year with a final project, a major piece of business consultancy work.

Core coursesThe core courses ensure you have an in-depth understanding of the essential business disciplines. They give you a solid foundation of knowledge which you apply to practical projects throughout the rest of the programme. You build on previous experience and acquire new knowledge and practical skills in accounting, economics, finance, statistics, marketing, organisational behaviour and strategy.

Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design (IE&D)The Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design (IE&D) course is a collaboration between Imperial College Business School, Imperial Innovations, the Royal College of Art (RCA) and other partners. The IE&D course goes beyond lectures, to offer you a real entrepreneurial journey during which you take an innovative idea and turn it into a marketable product. The process is as relevant to someone exploring innovation within an organisation as it is if you are planning to start your own business.

ElectivesElective courses provide you with the opportunity to specialise in an area of particular interest or to explore new avenues. As an Imperial MBA student, you undertake six electives.

ProjectPutting into practice the theory taught on the MBA, this project allows you to develop specialised expertise by researching a real business issue. Projects range from consultancy assignments to theoretical analyses and are often sponsored by companies.

Requirements

The Imperial MBA is designed for high-calibre individuals who demonstrate excellent academic ability and a track record of success. Entry requirements for the programme are listed below.

Work experience

To be eligible for entry onto the Imperial MBA programme you need a minimum of three years continuous relevant full-time work experience. The programme is highly interactive and students are encouraged to contribute their own experiences and insights in lectures. We value practically grounded student contributions so highly that we require that applicants have a minimum of three years relevant work experience prior to starting the programme. Students who have this minimum level of experience gain the maximum benefit from the learning curriculum.

Academic requirement

You need one of the following:

* A good undergraduate degree from a recognised university or the equivalent international qualification OR
* An acceptable professional qualification OR
* A pass in the Special Qualifying Examination (SQE).

Professional qualifications

Full membership of:

* ACCA
* Any Institute of Chartered Accountants in the UK or Ireland
* Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting.

Associateship or Fellowship of:

* Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

If you do not hold a degree or relevant professional qualification, but have extensive suitable work experience, you can apply by taking the SQE. This examination consists of:

* Two essay papers
* A quantitative methods examination
* A viva.

GMAT

A Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score of 600 or above is essential for all applicants. The GMAT is a computer adaptive test that can be taken throughout the year.

English language requirement

For those applicants who have not studied at a UK university (some English-speaking countries may be exempt from this) you are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. This is normally in the form of an English language test result such as:

IELTS: A minimum score of 7 including a score of 6 or better in written English.

TOEFL: A minimum score of 610 (or 253 in the computer-based test) including a minimum score of 4.5 in written English.

Interview

Once applications have been reviewed, those successful in the first stage will be invited for an interview where suitability for the programme will be further assessed.
