Products and services in today's world are steadily becoming more advanced and complex.

We need modern business processes in order to develop, sell, produce, purchase and maintain them, and to use and recycle them safely and efficiently. The way these business processes are organized and managed is crucial. And this is precisely the area on which te master's programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) concentrates. The master's programme focuses on the development and management of processes within or between companies. You will acquire up-to-date knowledge of scientific theories, allowing you to analyze and optimize processes in organizations and apply your findings. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the relation between process development, process control and the relevant achievement indicators. Are you interested in advising organizations in the business, financial services or healthcare sectors on how to improve processes so that they can optimize their performance? Can you appreciate the extent of the opportunities offered by information technology? Then this could be the right master's programme for you!

Specialities:

Financial Engineering and Management:

Over the past decade, the increasing complexity of financial products, the size of the markets, and the ever increasing variety in the products traded have generated a growing demand for skilled professionals to create, price and hedge complex derivatives and, more generally, to manage risk. Acquiring such skills requires mastering both mathematical and managerial knowledge. To meet this demand, we offer a Master's specialization in financial engineering and risk management. Students are trained to identify and quantify risk. Moreover, they should be able to determine the extent to which risk should be dealt with using financial engineering instruments or other types of solutions, such as reengineering business processes, adapting the firm's strategy, switching customers/suppliers or taking different investment decisions. Students will also benefit from comprehensive management training, learning to apply strategic skills to manage the firm's innovation and technology.

Health Care Technology and Management:

The Health Care Technology and Management (HCTM) specialization highlights the role of management in health care. This specialization has two main themes: entrepreneurship in technological innovation and health care logistics. Entrepreneurship focuses on the issues of effective development and implementation of health care technology by biomedical industry. Health care logistics focuses on the efficient application of these technologies in health care organizations, in particular in hospitals. Furthermore, we focus on the organizational aspects of hospitals from an Industrial Engineering and Management point of view. This means that some of the courses will be thaught along with the master program Biomedical Engineering.

Information Technology and Management:

Information technology has become a common and indispensable tool for modern businesses. But do businesses take real advantage of the possibilities? In order to answer this question, you need to have a thorough understanding of the role of information technology in organisations. Process analysis and design helps you to recognise how information technology can contribute directly to an organisation's added value. Both the technological possibilities and management's ability to bring about organisational change must be taken into account. This specialization prepares you to guide the redesign of business processes to make optimal use of the possibilities information technology offers, both within organisations and in dealing with external parties.

Production and Logistic Management:

IEM production and logistics focuses right at the heart of the supply chain from raw material to delivering end products to customers. Modern production and logistics methods are growing ever more complex. Product lifetime decreases, suppliers and buyers are increasingly geographically spread over the world and more and more activities are outsourced. Important issues are supply chain design: where to put production facilities, distribution centres; what capacities do we need for resources in production, distribution centres; how to structure operations management: in production, warehousing, transport and distribution, purchasing; how to get the desired service levels to customers; how to ensure process reliability, how does that interact with maintenance planning. In the Production and Logistic Management specialization the issue is to understand the impact of logistic designs to order on the overall performance. In our Business Process Laboratory, students gain skills in using advanced software tools for enterprise resource planning, simulation, applying integer linear programming problems, capacity analysis of production systems and distribution planning and vehicle routing.
