The master Health Sciences is an innovative programme with specializations in Health Technology Assessment and Health Services and Management.
New medical-technological developments have changed our perception of optimum healthcare. An ageing population has led to an increase in the incidence of diseases such as Parkinson, Alzheimer and strokes. In the long term, we can expect a huge rise in the demand for healthcare. Moreover, patients are becoming more demanding: they are no longer prepared to sit back and wait, but are taking on the role of critical consumers. Also increasingly stringent quality requirements and amendments to legislation and regulations are now occurring in healthcare insurance systems. All these developments have massive implications for healthcare. Which technology should be introduced and which should not? What obstacles should we expect to meet along the way? What measures are unavoidable in healthcare business operations? How can we involve patients in the decision-making processes? Finding and communicating the right solutions to all these problems is a real challenge.
Programme internationalization:
This programme has a workload of 60 ECTS.
Health Services and Management:
Improvement of organizations of care at the institutional level and between different institutions - that is one primary topic of interest of the specialization Health Services and Management. The specialization explores how to optimize quality, effectiveness, efficiency and security within the healthcare sector. The focus of this specialization is on the evaluation and implementation of new care concepts. For example: how can healthcare providers work together using care innovation and IT in caring for and treating people with common chronic disorders? New in this specialization is the logistic course which focuses on operations management and optimizing healthcare processes.
Health Technology Assessment:
This specialization focuses on the evaluation of medical technology and technology policy (effectiveness of policy and design of regulations for new medical technology). Imagine a new cytostatic drug has been developed that produces fewer side effects. Can you just administer this drug? Who is responsible? What do legislation and the regulations state? Or in another example: new technology has made it possible to tackle disease at the molecular level. This means made-to-measure treatment and prevention. But do we really want to equip everyone with their own individual healthcare monitor? Or in even another case: what is the most effective way of putting a revolutionary PET-scan machine, which can screen tumours, into operation in a hospital? What are the consequences for the organization and policy of care and communication with regard to patients and healthcare insurers? You will explore questions relating to patient empowerment and the introduction and costing of new technology in the healthcare sector.
