The type of activities undertaken in the workplace in relation to GIS varies considerably, but typically involves the collection, storage, manipulation, analysis and presentation of geographical information. These activities may require data collection exercises in the field, maintaining structures necessary for the manipulation of data and developing systems that present information in the most appropriate way for communicating meaning given the application area, which may include linking different sources of data together.
The kinds of application area vary significantly, but include producing estimates for service demand (e.g. schools), identifying regional commercial interest based on existing patterns, modelling the impact of disasters on the surrounding region (e.g. floods and disease) and determining the number of police officers required for a location based on trends within geographical information.
