Many products we use today did not exist or were totally different ten years ago. The core competence of industrial engineers is to design, redesign, develop and enhance products for all purposes.

This means graduates of Industrial Design Engineering masters programme have knowledge of many disciplines, including technology, production, marketing, consumer behaviour and aesthetics, and know how to integrate these when developing new concepts, products or solutions. Industrial engineers need to be able to take a wide spectrum of factors into account during the production process, including the price of the production process. During the masters program students gain skills and professional attitude that are needed to prepare them for the future.

Programme internationalization:

  • Studying abroad is optional.

This programme has a workload of 120 ECTS.

Specialities:

Architectural Building Components Design Engineering:

Building Systems Design concerns the development of new building components of new building systems (a set of interrelated components) and adds to the existing program of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) which focuses on the development of professional and consumer products.

Design and Styling:

The Master's degree track "Design and Styling" focuses on the design of tangible, intelligent products, such as recumbent bicycles, vacuum cleaners, portable CD players, power tools, electric shavers, fitness equipment or office furniture. An essential aspect of the products addressed is that they respond to external signals. This track does not focus on the design of a product's specialist (i.e. technical) inner workings, but rather on the moving parts, the user interface, the product's styling and the user's experience with the product. It highlights ways to take the different types of users into account. The design process presented also considers such issues as safety, effectiveness, comfort and cost.

Emerging Technology Design:

A lot of theoretical renewals and new technological principals are rarely applied, because nobody translates them into a product or application. In this track students are going to learn how to bring new and state of the art technology to the consumer market. The track Emerging Technology Design is the generic term for all education programmes in which technology is the departure point for the design of (new) products. Each student chooses a certain technology (e.g. Biomedical Technology, Smart Products, Fluid or Solid Mechanics, Material Science, Surface Technology, etc.) and studies the core principles and concepts as well as recent developments within this field. Apart of the technology courses, the students follow some general Design Engineering courses, with a focus on the integration of technology, market and human factors in designing.

Management of Product Development:

When launching new products, one should progress through the product development stages (i.e. from product concept through to finalised product) quickly and efficiently. The introduction and use of design tools and methods should also take place flexibly and effectively. In this Master'?s degree track, you learn to effectively manage the product creation process and to communicate with a variety of target groups, both internal and external (e.g. clients and suppliers). Although you are not always directly involved in a product's design, you will be sufficiently aware of various design techniques to adequately lead multi-disciplinary design teams. A few examples of the practical issues you will learn to address include drawing up a product development plan, drafting recommendations for the organisation of product development, setting up a feasibility study and optimising a product's life cycle.

Cradle to Cradle:

In designing new products closed cycle for materials will play more and more an important role. A strategy to maximize the ability of industry to turn used materials into new products will be a central issue of the Master specialization Cradle to Cradle. Following the biological system, technical loops of material can be developed in which products are optimized for reuse achieving a effective system of consumption and production. In this Master specialization attention will be given to principles of Cradle to Cradle and right design for technical or biological sphere. Students learn principles and methodologies and will apply these in an industrial environment.
