The MA in Literature, Culture and Society offers tuition in modern literary studies, ranging from the late 18th century to the present.
Essential Info
You can choose from a list of modules that explore the rich interconnections between literature, social history and other cultural forms, and develop the skills for further postgraduate research in literature. The course draws on existing staff expertise, with particular emphasis on 20th century literature, Welsh writing in English, women’s writing and Gothic studies.

What You Will Study
On the MA Literature, Culture and Society, you will study Researching Literature, a compulsory module on research skills, and choose four modules from a list of options. If you wish, this could include one or two modules from our MA Gothic Studies programme.

How You Will Study
You will learn in small seminar groups, with plenty of opportunity to participate in discussions and lead sessions. Researching Literature is taught in 24 one-hour seminars over the year and optional modules are taught in weekly, two-hour seminars over 12 weeks. Each module is continuously assessed, which involves writing essays or projects. The MA award is dependent on your submission of a dissertation between 15,000 and 20,000 words, which is a substantial piece of research under the close supervision of a member of staff who has research interests in your chosen area of study.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA minimum 2:1 Honours degree in English literature, or a related degree that has included the detailed study of English literary texts, eg, cultural studies, combined studies, humanities, theatre studies or womens studies, or a joint degree including English.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS score of 8.0. Admission to this award is at the discretion of the Award Leader and may be dependent upon a successful interview.
