The goal of the programme is to give you a deep insight in, and an overview of the discipline marine biology. You can choose between three different directions within marine biology, marine biodiversity, aquatic ecology or fish biology. Depending on chosen direction, students who have succeeded will have a good knowledge of flora and fauna in Norwegian and Nordic seas.
They will have insight in and gain experience when it comes to the use of marine biological field and lab methodologies, general methods for studying biodiversity and ecology and a good knowledge of aquatic ecological processes and patterns. They may specialise in physiology and anatomy, fish behaviour, genetics and systematic and larval ecology. They will also be trained in conducting an independent scientific study.
A master´s programme in marine biology consists of an individual research project (Master´s thesis) of 60 ECTC and courses or special topics of 60 ECTS. The compulsory subjects for all three specialisations are BIO300 Biological Data Analysis and Research Design (10 ECTS), MAR310 Methods for Marine Sciences (5 ECTS) and MAR211 Marine Flora and Fauna (10 ECTS). You will choose the other courses in agreement with your academic supervisor.
Master's thesis
In agreement with your academic supervisor, you will choose a Master´s thesis (60 ECTS) and make a progression plan containing important milestones for your project. The Master´s thesis can be either a practical research experiment or an analysis of collected data series.
Method
During the work on your Master´s thesis you will, in an independent way, make use of methods and scientific working techniques from the subject area in your research of relevant material. The master´s thesis can be based on your own field work and/or available data, or it can be of a more theoretical or experimental nature.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
