The aim of this course is to introduce students to techniques of linguistic description and central concepts in applied linguistics to proceed from this basis to more advanced study of central topics in theoretical/applied linguistics via the dissertation component to introduce students to research in theoretical/applied linguistics.
This course introduces students to techniques of linguistic description and central concepts in applied linguistics, and proceeds from this basis to more advanced study of central topics in applied linguistics.
Via modules in research methodology and the dissertation component, students are introduced to research in applied linguistics. Language-specific components of the course cater for Irish, English (as a second or foreign language), Irish Sign Language, and the continental European languages of the Irish school curriculum (French, German, Italian, Spanish).
Students take six modules and undertake a research project that is written up as a 15,000 word dissertation. The modules are taught in Michaelmas and Hilary terms, and the dissertation preparation and writing takes place in Trinity term and the long vacation (July-September). Four core modules are mandatory and two are elective options.

Applicants are, however, expected to have substantial language teaching experience, and should have a good honours degree (at least an upper second or equivalent; GPA of at least 3.2).
