The Master´s programme Sustainable Technology is based on the concept of Industrial Ecology with focus on the understanding of interactions between technical, economic, social and ecological systems and processes.
The Master´s programme Sustainable Technology is based on the concept of Industrial Ecology. This could be considered as a concept for how industry, or rather the entire industrial society of today, will work in the future in order to reduce its interference with the life-supporting ecosystems of the world. Risk Assessment is also a very important area in sustainable development that includes issues such as comparing risks between different energy solutions, communication of risks between different stakeholders etc.
Technology is an important driving force for economic development and technology and communication are two essential factors in the development of more sustainable societies. Without using technology in a sustainable way, it will not be possible to attain economic growth and global equity. Without communication skills, it will not be possible to reach consensus in the democratic processes in society for different new technologies. These insights will be the foundation in the Master’s programme in Sustainable Technology.
Career prospects
Students graduating from the the Master´s programme Sustainable Technology have a spectrum of knowledge and skills adapted to work with sustainable development specially focused on environmental management, both in the private and public sectors. The application areas for this knowledge could be e.g. advisor to local or regional authorities in the planning and implementation process, or officers in government agencies, but also environmental managers and advisors in both public and private companies. In view of the growing awareness regarding the need to build more long-term sustainable societies, graduates from the programme will have the skills to help them become key players in developing the necessary strategies for the future.
Contents
The Master´s programme in Sustainable Technology has a total duration of 2 years, divided in 4 terms. The programme is built up of 3 terms of theoretical courses which amount to 90 ECTS credits. Compulsory courses amount to 55,5 ECTS and 34,5 ECTS are from elective courses.
The study period is followed by an average five to six months of thesis project work (30 ECTS). The programme is open to applicants from all over the world. The programme language is English.
The pedagogical concept applied in the learning process is to work with projects, best practice and case studies, consequently considerable effort is put into training students in discussions, methods for critical analysis and written and oral presentations. It is also high priority to link courses and projects to practical experience through cooperation with companies, institutions and public authorities.

Semester 2
* Degree project
After completing all course work, students are assigned a degree project to take up a period of 5-6 months´ study (30 ECTS). The degree project may be carried out either in an academic environment (university, research institute, or equivalent) in a public or an industrial setting (municipality, city, power plant, consulting agency or other industry/business). While suitable degree project topics may be proposed and assigned by programme lecturers, or by specialists from related industries/businesses, students are encouraged to define relevant projects on their own, and to seek environments in which these can be successfully carried out. Students are recommended to try to find relevant degree projects linked to important sustainability topics in their home countries.

Requirements
General admission requirements
The general requirements are the same for all applicants to advanced level studies in Sweden.
1. Previous studies
A completed Bachelor's degree.
A completed Bachelor's degree, corresponding to a Swedish Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS), or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognised university. The university has to be listed in the latest edition of the International Handbook of Universities. A Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering is required for most programmes at KTH.
2. Language requirements
Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency which is most commonly established through an internationally recognised test.
TOEFL
* Paper-based test: total result of 575 (written test, grade 4.5)
* Internet-based test: total result of 90 (written test, grade 20)
English test results from TOEFL should be sent directly from the ETS test centre to University Studies in Sweden (code 9520).
IELTS
* A minimum overall mark of 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic Training accepted)

Applicants must hold a degree of Bachelor in Technology/Engineering or Science or an equivalent degree.
Selection process
The selection process for Sustainable Technology is based on a total evaluation of the following selection criteria: university, GPA, course work related to the programme, thesis proposal, motivation letter, work experience and references.

All applications must be supported by documentation including Transcripts of Records, Degree certificate/Diploma, proof of English proficiency etc.
