The curriculum is designed especially to promote the following skills:
* to assess the quality and quantity of natural resources and their influence upon agricultural production in tropical and subtropical countries
* to consider agricultural production systems and methods with regard to nutrient cycles on different temporal and spatial scales
* to integrate this knowledge into management recommendations and to evaluate different strategies from the aspect of sustainability
* to recognize potentials for processing products and to improve their storage and transport capacity
* to reduce or overcome infrastructural constraints and limitations with regard to market access and trade restrictions, and thus enhance the marketability of agricultural products and the income in agriculture likewise
* to elaborate concrete development and extension approaches for sustainable agricultural production on different levels (farm, project, institution, administration, policy) under consideration of the socio-economic context
The two year M.Sc. course consists of 14 modules, one case study and one research semester. Seven of the modules are compulsory. In order to allow students to create an individual profile the general or compulsory modules will be followed by 5 or 6 modules to be taken in one of the specialisations: Natural Resource Management | Plant and Animal Production | Rural Development Economics. Two or three optional modules may be taken out of the module catalogue of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences or at any partner university abroad.

Each year, 40 students are admitted to the programme. Students require an above-average Bachelor of Science or an equivalent degree in Agriculture, Natural Sciences or a related discipline following at least three years of university studies oder German FH studies. Over and above these general entry requirements, selection will be based upon grades, educational background and relevant professional experience. Additional professional qualificationsccan also be considered.
Applicants whose first language is not English and have no firm degree in English have to provide proof of proficiency in English (i.e. in TOEFL or IELTS Academic Test). TOEFL Scores are:
* a minimum of 550 points in the paper based test
* 213 points in the computer based test or
* 79 points in the internet-based TOEFL test
