In recent years, a variety of developments in both the theory and practice of management have created significant challenges and opportunities in the field of human resource management. In some companies, employees are viewed as a resource integral to the success of the firm: this has resulted in an emphasis on an expanding human resource function. Other firms have moved in the opposite direction, slimming down their personnel departments and devolving human resource functions to line management.
Beyond the company, international developments are becoming more significant as a result of greater globalisation in the world economy. The activities of multinational companies are an important feature of Irish industry and their activities are being mirrored by European Union attempts to regulate employment and promote what is termed a "social market economy". The concurrent growth of the small and medium size enterprises (SME) has also placed the spotlight on the need to develop the HR company of this sector.
To assist organisations in the private, public, non-profit and semi-state sectors in meeting the challenges created by these developments, the Kemmy Business School is offering a focused postgraduate studies programme in Human Resource Management.
To develop among current and future human resource professionals a sophisticated understanding of the competitive, economic, and regulatory contexts in which organisations operate and a comprehensive knowledge of the latest developments occurring within the human resource profession, and the analytical and evaluative skills needed to assess the applicability of these developments in differing organisational contexts.
