Molecular biology is the study of biological macromolecules and the processes in which they are involved. We study the molecular structure, chemistry and physics of DNA, RNA, protein, carbohydrates and lipids to understand their place and function in the living organisms. At the Department of Molecular Biology, research mainly focuses on basic problems, such as gene organising and expression, protein structure and function, chromatin structure, developmental biology, toxicology, structural and functional studies of bacteria and viruses, cancer research, proteome and genome research. Gene technology and bioinformatics are important tools in our research.

The Master´s Programme in Molecular Biology will result in a wide-ranging knowledge and understanding of the field of molecular biology. During the master´s programme you will plan and carry out biochemical and molecular biological experiments, and evaluate the results in light of the hypothesis being tested. The programme will provide you with experience when it comes to oral and written presentation of results and theories, and training in critical reading and evaluation of relevant scientific literature.

Contents

A master´s programme in molecular biology consists of an individual research project (master´s thesis) of 60 ECTS and courses of 60 ECTS. Two courses are mandatory: Practical Molecular Biology and Structural Molecular Biology. In addition, you might be required by the Programme Committee to take specific courses to ensure that you have the required knowledge in molecular biology and chemistry.

Master's thesis
In consultation with your academic supervisor, you will choose a master thesis (60 ECTS-credits) and produce a progression plan containing important milestones for your project. As a master student you will normally be affiliated to a research group at the department, and the master´s project will be within the research fields of the group. The master´s project can also be carried out in collaborating research groups at the Institute of Marine Research and Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology.

Method
During your work on your the master´s project you will learn and make use of a vide range of methods and scientific working techniques in modern molecular biology. You will learn to plan and conduct scientific experiments independently and to critically evaluate your own results as well as current literature. Research in molecular biology is centred around laboratory experiments. However, training in bioinformatics, as well as scientific writing, will also be included in the program.

Professional Prospects
Molecular biologists work in research and education at universities, university colleges and other specialized institutions at university level. Hospitals also employ molecular biologists. Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology in both industry and research are important working fields. Molecular biologists also work within agriculture and fisheries, in administrative and educational occupations and within public management. The master programme also form the basis for further studies at the doctoral level (PhD) in molecular biology and related fields of science.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Who may apply:
You need a Bachelor´s degree in Molecular Biology or equivalent education - with first class results. Admission to the programme will be based on content and performance in chemistry and molecular biology, which in general should not be any less than three semesters worth of courses.

Equivalent education must include basic molecular biology and may be a three year engineering or bioengineering degree, or with a background in biology, chemistry, physics or informatics. In addition basic laboratory skills in molecular biology/biochemistry are required.

Applicants with 2nd class, upper division/B average or the equivalent will not be considered for admission.

How many places:
Within 5 places are reserved for qualified international applicants in the Master's Programme in Molecular Biology.

Additional Requirements

Minimal degree required: Bachelor's degree
Minimal amount of work experience Not specified

Accreditation

The University of Bergen is one of three Norwegian universities accredited by the US Department of Education. That means that, for more than twenty years now, it has been possible for American students wishing to study at the University of Bergen to apply for financial support from the American student loan programme (FFELP) under the US Department of Education. UiB's accreditation entails regular thorough evaluations of its quality systems by external evaluators.
