Programme Description

How can we provide for the world´s population today without exhausting the natural resources also required by generations to come? This is one of the most pressing problems for us to solve. Food production ever more relies on technical means of production, thus straining our natural resources to their limit. Nevertheless, food production is intensified and the globalisation of markets even speeds up this process.

One of this century´s major challenges is to intensify food production as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. The concept of sustainability also includes recycling of waste. Complex problems particularly arise on the periphery of densely populated areas where competing forms of land use have to be balanced (e.g. settlement, recreation, waste disposal). In attempts to handle these problems we not only have to consider:

* scientific, technical, socio-economic, political and legal aspects

To this end the University of Hohenheim has developed the M.Sc. programme "Environmental Protection and Agricultural Food Production". It is designed to provide qualified people of all nationalities with internationally competitive, state-of-the-art training. Graduates will acquire the tools-of-the-trade enabling them to:

* analyse and understand ecosystematical, economic, political and administrative interdependencies
* develop integrative problem solutions

This M.Sc. Programme is compatible with university courses worldwide. It offers: * Master of Science Degree, qualifying students for admission to a Ph.D. Programme
* Assessment based on the internationally recognised Credit Point System ECTS
* Active involvement of academic staff from international partner institutions

After successful completion of all modules as well as the thesis, the student is awarded the degree "Master of Science" (M.Sc.) in "Environmental Protection and Agricultural Food Production". This degree entitles the student to continuing with a Ph.D./doctoral programme.

The two year M.Sc. course starts in October each year. It consists of three in-class semesters comprising 15 thematic units of study (modules) including an interdisciplinary research project. 7 modules are compulsory, 8 elective modules may be chosen from a catalogue of more than eighty modules. The compulsory modules are taught during the first two semesters.

* students with an agricultural background are obliged to take the module "Food Technology and Residues"
* for students with a background in Food Technology the module "Agricultural Production and Residues" is compulsory

The compulsory module "Environmental Science Project" sets the frame for groups of 3-4 students to apply the knowledge gained by dealing with a practical problem of Environmental Sciences. Basic knowledge in Chemistry, Physics and Biology is required in order to follow most modules.
Some modules include excursions to topic related sites, e.g.

* agroecological research sites,
* livestock production farms,
* farmers´ associations for regional production,
* biodiversity conservation projects, and
* regenerative energy plants.

All modules are subject to continual re-evaluation and are thus constantly being revised and improved. Regular feedback discussions between students and lecturers form the basis for this revision process.

Structure of the Master Programme:

The programme structure allows students to select modules according to their career aspirations. Thus, students can create their individual job profiles.
Students are encouraged to spend (part of) their third semester at one of the various partner universities abroad. The University of Hohenheim cooperates with more than 100 universities worldwide thus facilitating easy access. During their final semester, students do their thesis research and write-up. Students are encouraged to work on a practical problem in close co-operation with companies and institutions outside the university.
