The Graduate Diploma in Education Leadership is a part-time programme over one academic year and one Summer School. It is provided by the Department of Education and Professional Studies and combines coursework on relevant aspects of educational leadership and reflective practice with a school-based research project.
Objectives
* The aims of the programme are to develop the leadership and management skills appropriate to the needs of modern educational institutions,
* To provide present and future education leaders with the necessary skills of inquiry and reflection
* To introduce students to relevant aspects of educational research and good practice.

Senior and middle management positions in schools. Management positions in national and local educational authorities and bodies.
Graduate Diploma
The Summer School is an integral part of the course and attendance is mandatory. During Semesters 1 and 2 participants will be required to attend the University for some six hours per week, normally on Saturdays. Continuous assessment will apply throughout the programme. Assessment procedures will be flexible with a strong emphasis on seminar and project work.
M.Ed. in Education Leadership
Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma programme and achieve 2.1 honours standard or better are eligible to apply for transfer to the Master's Degree. The Master's programme comprises all the taught modules of the Graduate Diploma programme, a second module on research methods (Summer School) and completion of a dissertation on an approved subject relevant to the area of education leadership. Candidates for the Master's Degree are expected to submit a dissertation of approx. 25,000 words.
COURSE CONTENT:
Year 1 Summer:
Research Methods, Exploring educational leadership.
Semester 1
Teaching, learning and their milieu; The reflective portfolio and teacher professional development; Project 1.
Semester 2
Educational leadership: Macro perspectives; The reflective portfolio and educational leadership; School leadership; Project 2.
Year 2:
Research Methods 2; Dissertation 1&2; Dissemination of Research Findings.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testCandidates from within the teaching profession should be recognised teachers with a minimum of three years experience at primary, post-primary or further education or in education support services. Other candidates should hold a primary degree and have relevant experience. Candidates will normally be required to have the active support of their senior management and board of management. Final selection will involve attendance for interview.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.
Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
