The programme introduces students to a comparative study of the laws and legal systems of the European Union, individual European states and some of the Union's main trading partners in North America. The emphasis is on a comparative study of common law and civil law treatment of primary areas of the law.

The programme also includes scope to pursue business and criminal justice themes. The European, international and comparative orientation of the programme will enhance the career prospects of graduates in the legal profession, industry, commerce, agriculture, criminal justice and the public sector. Generally it also offers a solid foundation for progression to a PhD by research.

The primary objective of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to research, interpret and apply the law applicable to any given situation from both a common law and civil law perspective, and to appreciate the comparative similarities and differences between them. The programme also aims to impart a sound knowledge of the law and legal systems of: Ireland, Britain, France, Germany, the European Union, the USA and Canada.

Graduates of this programme are attractive to a wide range of employers including: the legal profession, the financial services sector, industry, commerce, criminal justice, the public sector, the European Union and other European and international bodies.
