The programme introduces students to a comparative study of the laws and legal systems of the European Union, individual European states and some of the Union's main trading partners in North America. The emphasis is on a comparative study of common law and civil law treatment of primary areas of the law.
The programme also includes scope to pursue business and criminal justice themes. The European, international and comparative orientation of the programme will enhance the career prospects of graduates in the legal profession, industry, commerce, agriculture, criminal justice and the public sector. Generally it also offers a solid foundation for progression to a PhD by research.
The primary objective of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to research, interpret and apply the law applicable to any given situation from both a common law and civil law perspective, and to appreciate the comparative similarities and differences between them. The programme also aims to impart a sound knowledge of the law and legal systems of: Ireland, Britain, France, Germany, the European Union, the USA and Canada.
Graduates of this programme are attractive to a wide range of employers including: the legal profession, the financial services sector, industry, commerce, criminal justice, the public sector, the European Union and other European and international bodies. They are particularly attractive to employers requiring a knowledge of the law and legal system of other countries.
Semester 1
Introduction to Comparative and European Law, Comparative, Law of Civil Obligations, Comparative Law of Real Property, Comparative Legal Research Skills.
Semester 2
Dissertation Methodology and three of the following:
Comparative Competition Law, Comparative Insurance Law, Law of the Common Agricultural Policy, European Criminal Law Comparative Criminal Justice, European Legal History and Comparative International Protection of Human Rights Law.
In Addition Students have to complete a 15,000 word dissertation.
The programme is also available on a part-time basis.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testSecond class honours in law or in another primary degree in which the legal component accounts for at least 50% of the whole programme.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.
Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
