Public interest in the contexts in which works of art and design were created has never been greater. This is reflected in growing attendances at museums, art galleries and historic sites and houses. There is an expanding television audience for programmes on art and design in history and a large market for both specialist and popular art publications. All of these have led to an appreciation of the need for education and research in the history of art and architecture.
Recent graduates, professionals in art and design institutions, (especially museums and galleries) and individuals wishing to enhance their own knowledge and research skills in a supportive and stimulating environment will be strongly attracted to this research oriented programme.
The aim of the course is to promote advanced study in the history of art and architecture in its cultural contexts. On completion students will have deepened their knowledge of the history of art and design, gained the ability to identify significant issues for research in the history of art and architecture, and developed skills to conduct and present the results of their research.
